Wacken Open Air (W:O:A) est le plus grand festival au monde à être uniquement consacré au metal. Il se déroule tous les ans dans le petit village de Wacken en Allemagne. Il a attiré environ 75 000 participants en 2008[1] venant du monde entier.
La première édition s'est tenue en 1990, à cette époque ce n'était qu'un petit rassemblement de groupe locaux allemands. En 1998, le festival est devenu majeur en Europe et est le plus important au niveau mondial, il ressemble alors plus de 70 groupes venant d'Europe, d'Amérique du Nord et d'Australie. W:O:A se déroule le premier weekend du mois d'août et dure cinq jours dont trois de concerts, pendant lesquels les festivaliers campent sur les terrains jouxtant les scènes. Les prestations des groupes se déroulent sur trois grosses scènes: black stage, true metal stage et party stage plus une scène sous chapiteau "WET stage". Généralement les portes du festival ouvrent le mardi soir pour accueillir les premiers campeurs. Le mercredi c'est karaoké metal et le show classique de Mambo Kurt qui joue les plus gros titres métal sur du piano ! Jeudi les concerts commencent en douceur puis vendredi et samedi très peu de répit, une programmation est faite et les concerts s'enchainent jusqu'à très tard dans la nuit. Pour les plus couche-tard il est possible de finir les nuits au karaoké avec des bars aménagés sur place. Les festivaliers doivent, avant de pouvoir s'installer au camp, présenter leurs billets afin de recevoir un bracelet aux couleurs du festival (ces couleurs changent selon l'année du festival. Ce festival n'est pas simplement un regroupement musical c'est également un lieu d'échanges culturels compte tenu des nombreuses provenances des festivaliers. Les éditions du W:O:A ont donné lieu à de nombreux concerts de groupes en reformation.
