Il était marié à Hilary Swank, divorcés en 2006. Il est le frère cadet de l'acteur Rob Lowe. Il est maintenant marié à Kim Painter, depuis 2010. Il est papa de deux petites filles, Mabel, née en mai 2009 et de Fiona Hepler née le 15 novembre 2012.
