Men's Singles[modifier | modifier le code]

Novak Djokovic was the defending champion and successfully defended his title, defeating Andy Murray, 6–1, 7–5, 7–6(7–3) in a rematch of the previous year's final, and the fourth Australian Open final between the pair. Djokovic also equaled Roy Emerson's all-time men's record of six Australian Open singles titles. Australian Lleyton Hewitt, a 2005 finalist, two-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1, played his last professional matches in both singles and doubles. In singles, he lost to David Ferrer in the second round. In doubles, he lost in the third round.

Women's Singles[modifier | modifier le code]

Serena Williams was the defending champion, and attempting for the second time to equal Steffi Graf's career record of 22 major singles titles. She lost in the final to Angelique Kerber, 4–6, 6–3, 4–6. Kerber became the first woman to win a singles major title after having saved a match point in the first round, which she did against Misaki Doi. She is also the first German of either sex to win a major since Graf at the 1999 French Open. The top three seeds (Williams, Simona Halep and Garbiñe Muguruza) were in contention for the world No. 1 ranking at the beginning of the tournament. However, Halep and Muguruza were eliminated in the first and third rounds, respectively, with Williams retaining the top spot at the end of the tournament. The twelve seeds that lost in the opening round was the most in the opening round of any major tournament since the 32-seed draw was adopted at the 2001 Wimbledon Championships. Johanna Konta became the first British woman to reach the semi-final of a major since Jo Durie in 1983. Zhang Shuai became the first qualifier to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals since Angélica Gavaldón in 1990.

French Open[modifier | modifier le code]

Men's Singles[modifier | modifier le code]

Defending champion Stan Wawrinka lost in the semifinals to Andy Murray, who became the first British man since Bunny Austin in 1937 to reach the final. Novak Djokovic won his first French Open title, defeating Murray in the final, 3–6, 6–1, 6–2, 6–4. Djokovic completed a career Grand Slam and achieved a non-calendar year Grand Slam with this title, becoming the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four major titles at once and the first man in history to do so on three different surfaces. Djokovic also became the first man since Jim Courier in 1992 to win both the Australian and French Opens in the same calendar year; additionally, he spent his 200th week at number one in the ATP rankings during the first week of the tournament and his 100th week in a row at number one in the ATP rankings during the second week of the tournament. This tournament marked the first time in the 21st century that Roger Federer did not play at a main draw Grand Slam singles event, ending a record of 65 consecutive Grand Slam appearances, the last Grand Slam he missed having been the 1999 US Open.

Women's Singles[modifier | modifier le code]

Serena Williams was the defending champion, but lost in the final to Garbiñe Muguruza, 5–7, 4–6. Williams was attempting, for the third time, to equal Steffi Graf's Open Era record of 22 major singles titles. She was also attempting to become only the second player, after Steffi Graf, to complete a quadruple Career Grand Slam. Muguruza became just the second Spanish woman in history, after three-time champion Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, to win the French Open. Williams retained the WTA no. 1 singles ranking after Agnieszka Radwańska failed to reach in the quarter-final. Kiki Bertens became the first Dutch woman to reach the semi-final of a Grand Slam event since Betty Stöve reached the same stage, at the 1977 US Open.

Wimbledon[modifier | modifier le code]

Men's Singles[modifier | modifier le code]

Novak Djokovic was the two-time defending champion and top seed, but lost in the third round to No. 28 seed, Sam Querrey. This was his first defeat before the quarterfinals of a major tournament since the 2009 French Open, a streak of 28 quarterfinal appearances in a row. The defeat also snapped his streak of four consecutive major tournament victories, dating back to the 2015 Wimbledon Championships. Andy Murray won his third major and second Wimbledon title defeating Milos Raonic in the final, 6–4, 7–6(7–3), 7–6(7–2). Raonic became the first Canadian male tennis player to reach a Grand Slam final. He was also the first non-European to reach the final at Wimbledon since Andy Roddick in 2009. It was the first time since 2002 that the men's final didn't feature Djokovic, Roger Federer, or Rafael Nadal. This ended Federer's season as he did not play tennis again until the start of the 2017 Hopman Cup due to knee and back injuries. This was the first Grand Slam of Juan Martín del Potro since the 2014 Australian Open, following a long extensive break from wrist injury. He was granted a protected ranking at the start of the tournament, he lost to Lucas Pouille in the third round. This was the 53rd consecutive major in which at least one of the semi-finalists had won at least one major prior to the tournament.

Women's Singles[modifier | modifier le code]

Serena Williams was the defending champion and successfully defended her title, defeating Angelique Kerber in the final, 7–5, 6–3. By winning her seventh Wimbledon title, Williams equaled Steffi Graf's Open Era record of 22 major singles titles. This was also the first time two women contested two major finals against one another in a single season since Amélie Mauresmo and Justine Henin-Hardenne met in the 2006 Australian Open and Wimbledon finals. The top five seeds (Williams, Garbiñe Muguruza, Agnieszka Radwańska, Kerber and Simona Halep) were in contention for the world No. 1 ranking at the beginning of the tournament. However, Halep was removed from the contention at the end of third round, while Williams retained the top spot by reaching the fourth round and eventually winning the title. She also spent her 300th week at the top of the WTA rankings during the second week of the tournament, and won her 300th Slam match at the tournament by defeating Annika Beck in the third round. At 36 years old, Venus Williams became the oldest woman to reach a Grand Slam semifinal since Martina Navratilova at the 1994 Wimbledon Championships.

US Open[modifier | modifier le code]

Men's Singles[modifier | modifier le code]

Novak Djokovic was the defending champion, but lost in the final to Stan Wawrinka, 7–6(7–1), 4–6, 5–7, 3–6. This was the first time the men's singles champion at the US Open won the match after losing the first set since Juan Martín del Potro in 2009. This was also the first time the men's singles champion at the US Open won the title after being a match point down since Djokovic in 2011, with Wawrinka having saved a match point against Dan Evans in the 3rd round. As he had done in his 2 previous grand slam titles, Wawrinka again defeated the world No. 1 in the final. This was the first US Open since 1999 not to feature five-time champion Roger Federer. It was also the first Grand Slam tournament since the 2004 French Open in which none of Federer, Rafael Nadal, or Andy Murray reached the semifinals. This was also the first US Open in the Open Era to feature 3 French quarterfinalists with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Lucas Pouille, and Gaël Monfils all reaching that round. In addition, no American player was seeded inside the top 16 for the first time since the introduction of the seeding system in 1930. This was the first Grand Slam that Tomáš Berdych, world number 8 at the time, had missed since his maiden Slam at the 2003 US Open ending his streak of 52 consecutive grand slam appearances, sixth all time. The reason for his withdrawal was appendicitis.

Women's Singles[modifier | modifier le code]

Flavia Pennetta was the defending champion, but retired from professional tennis at the end of the 2015 season. Angelique Kerber won the title, defeating Karolína Plíšková in the final, 6–3, 4–6, 6–4. It was Kerber's second Grand Slam singles title. She became the first German to win the US Open since Steffi Graf in 1996. Serena Williams was attempting to set new Open Era records by winning a 23rd Grand Slam singles title and a second attempt to set a seventh US Open singles title, but she lost in the semifinals to Plíšková. In doing so, she remained with an overall of 22 Major titles shared with Graf and six US Open titles shared with Chris Evert. Plíšková became the first Czech woman to make the US Open final since 1993, and only the fourth player to beat both of the Williams sisters in the same Grand Slam tournament (she beat Venus Williams in the fourth round). Kerber attained the WTA no. 1 ranking for the first time at the end of the tournament after Williams failed to reach the final. All of the top four seeds (including Kerber and Williams) were in contention for the No. 1 ranking at the start of the tournament. Former world No. 1 and 2008 French Open Champion Ana Ivanovic played the final match of her professional career in the first round where she ultimately lost to Denisa Allertová. She would announce retirement prior to the 2017 season because of ongoing injuries.
