Milton « Milt » Holland (né Milton Olshansky le 7 février, 1917 et décédé le 4 Novembre 2005) était un batteur américain, percussionniste, ethnomusicologue et écrivain, issu de la scène musicale de Los Angeles. Il a été le premier à utiliser les styles de percussions africaines, sud-américaines et indiennes dans le jazz, la pop et les musiques de film, voyageant beaucoup dans ces régions pour collecter des instruments et apprendre à les jouer.
Jeunesse[modifier | modifier le code]
Milt Holland est né Milton Olshansky à Chicago, dans l’Illinois, où il a fréquenté le lycée Theodore Roosevelt . Son premier instrument est le violon . Il a développé par la suite une passion pour les percussions, jouant dans des clubs et des spectacles et à la radio CBS à Chicago. À l'âge de douze ans, il joua dans les speakeasies d'Al Al Capone .

Au début des années 1940, Holland tourne et enregistre avec le Raymond Scott Orchestra.
Il étudie le tabla à UCLA et avec Ramnad Easwaran. En Inde, Milt Holland étudie avec le maître de tabla Chatur Lal à partir de 1963. Il a beaucoup voyagé en Inde au début des années 1960 et 1970, puis a passé de nombreuses années en Afrique à étudier les rythmes tribaux. Il fut l'un des premiers à introduire ces instruments dans les enregistrements occidentaux.
Après avoir déménagé à Los Angeles en 1946, il a joué sur d'innombrables albums de jazz et de pop, ainsi que sur des musiques de film et de télévision. Parmi les artistes avec lesquels il a travaillé, citons Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, les Beatles, les Rolling Stones, Chaka Khan, John Williams, Leonard Bernstein, Elmer Bernstein, Quincy Jones, Nat King Cole, Henry Mancini, Loggins et Messina, James Taylor, Ella Fitzgerald, Laurindo Almeida, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seals_and_Crofts" rel="mw:ExtLink" data-linkid="111" class="cx-link" title="Seals and Crofts">Seals and Croft</a>, Ray Manzarek, Michael Dinner, Gordon Lightfoot, Ringo Starr, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Poco, Captain Beefheart, David Blue, Rita Coolidge, Carly Simon, Cal Tjader, The Doobie Brothers, Little Feat, Maria Muldaur, Randy Newman et Joni Mitchell . Il a joué du pandeiro, des congas et du triangle dans Big Yellow Taxi, du tube de Mitchell, ainsi que des congas et des percussions dans Light My Fire des Doors, avec José Feliciano .
En tant que membre de l'auto-proclamée " Wrecking Crew " (collectif de musiciens de studio de Los Angeles), Milt Holland remporte plusieurs disques d'or et de platine pour ses contributions. Il était fier d'avoir contribué à la déségrégation de la Los Angeles Musicians Union. Milt Holland finit par devenir le premier choix de percussions exotiques parmi les musiciens de studio indépendants de Los Angeles.
Dans les films, Holland a joué des bongos sur la bande originale de West Side Story et des timbales sur la bande originale de Silent Running, pour ne nommer qu'une infime fraction de sa production. Il était l'un des sept percussionnistes illustres, dont Shelly Manne, Jack Sperling et Larry Bunker, qui ont contribué à la bande originale du film de John Wayne Hatari!, jouant des instruments africains sur l’album de la bande originale, The Sounds of Hatari, et son titre phare. Il a joué pour la bande originale de la série télévisée Roots. Il a également joué l'accompagnement musical de Tinker Bell dans le film d'animation Disney de 1953, Peter Pan, et pour le tintement du nez dans la série télévisée Bewitched .
Mort et vie personnelle[modifier | modifier le code]
Milt Holland est mort à Los Angeles à l'âge de 88 ans. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse Mildred Holland, ses fils Richard Holland et Robert Holland, ses petits-enfants Damien et Chloé et l'épouse de Richard Seiko. [1]
Sa veuve Mildred est décédée le 21 octobre 2015. [2]
