Australian Open[modifier | modifier le code]

Men's Singles[modifier | modifier le code]

Novak Djokovic was the three-time defending champion, but lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Stanislas Wawrinka, bringing Djokovic's 25-match winning streak at the Australian Open, 28-match winning streak overall, and streak of 14 consecutive Grand Slam semifinals to an end. Rafael Nadal was trying to become the third man to complete a double career Grand Slam and was also trying to tie Pete Sampras's record of 14 Grand Slam wins. Eighth seed Wawrinka won the title by defeating top seed Nadal in the final, becoming the first man outside of the Big Four to win a Grand Slam since Juan Martín del Potro won the 2009 US Open. He also became the first male player to defeat the top two seeds at a Grand Slam since Sergi Bruguera at the 1993 French Open. By participating in this tournament, Roger Federer broke the record of consecutive Grand Slam appearances as this was his 57th consecutive appearance at a Major.

French Open[modifier | modifier le code]

Men's Singles[modifier | modifier le code]

Rafael Nadal was the four-time defending champion and successfully defended his title, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final, claiming his record-extending ninth French Open crown and his fourteenth Grand Slam, tying him with Pete Sampras in second place for the most Grand Slam titles. By winning the tournament, Nadal improved his record at Roland Garros to 66–1 and became the first man to win the French Open five times in a row. Both Nadal and Djokovic were in contention for the world no. 1 ranking at the start of the tournament, but Nadal retained the top position by defeating the Serbian in the final. This was the sixth time Djokovic met Nadal at Roland Garros with Nadal claiming all six wins.

Serena Williams was the defending champion but she lost to Garbiñe Muguruza in the second round. Maria Sharapova won her second French Open title and 5th major overall by defeating first-time finalist Simona Halep 6–4, 6–7(5–7), 6–4 in a match that lasted over three hours. It was the first time since 2001 that the final went to three sets. Halep became the first Romanian to reach the final since Virginia Ruzici in 1980. The top three seeds (Williams, Li Na and Agnieszka Radwańska) were in contention for the world No. 1 ranking at the start of the tournament. However, they all failed to reach the fourth round and so Williams retained the top spot in the end.

Wimbledon[modifier | modifier le code]

Men's Singles[modifier | modifier le code]

Andy Murray was the defending champion, but he lost to Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals. Novak Djokovic won the final, defeating Roger Federer in five sets to claim his second Wimbledon and seventh grand slam title. It was also his first win at a major since the 2013 Australian Open. 19-year-old Nick Kyrgios became the first player to reach the quarterfinals on his Wimbledon debut since Florian Mayer in 2004. Kyrgios also become the lowest-ranked player since 1992 to defeat the World No. 1 at a grand slam by defeating Rafael Nadal in the fourth round. The final was the first Grand Slam men's singles final since the 2009 US Open to feature neither Murray nor Nadal. Although Nadal was World No. 1 entering the tournament, the Spaniard was seeded second behind Novak Djokovic due to his recent poor performances on grass. After claiming the title, Djokovic replaced Nadal as the World No.1, taking the top position for the first time since October 2013.

Women's Singles[modifier | modifier le code]

Marion Bartoli was the reigning champion, but retired from professional tennis in August 2013 several weeks after she won the tournament which meant she could not defend her title. Like the previous major, the 2014 Wimbledon Championships was marked by two big upsets. The top two seeds – Serena Williams and Li Na – both lost in the third round. That marked the first time in the Open era neither of the top two seeds reached the fourth round of Wimbledon. Five-time Wimbledon champion Williams' defeat to 25th-seeded Alizé Cornet equalled her earliest exit from the tournament (she lost at the same stage in 1998 and 2005), while Li fell to unseeded Barbora Záhlavová-Strýcová, and this was Li's final professional tennis match before she announced her retirement almost three months later. Petra Kvitová advanced to her second Wimbledon final. She won defeating Eugenie Bouchard in a comprehensive straight-sets victory that only took 55 minutes (see details below). This marked the fifth-shortest women's singles final in Wimbledon history in terms of time elapsed.

US Open[modifier | modifier le code]

Men's Singles[modifier | modifier le code]

Rafael Nadal was the defending champion, but he withdrew before the tournament began because of a right wrist injury. Marin Čilić claimed his first grand slam title, defeating Kei Nishikori, also playing in his first major final. Both players defeated Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer in their respective semi-finals to guarantee a new champion, the first Grand Slam final with a guaranteed new champion since the 2008 Australian Open (when Djokovic defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga), and the first Grand Slam with two first-time Slam finalists since the 2005 French Open (where Nadal defeated Mariano Puerta). It was also the first time since the 2005 Australian Open final (where Marat Safin defeated Lleyton Hewitt) that neither Djokovic, Federer, Andy Murray nor Nadal has featured in a Grand Slam final, and the first time since 2003 (when Juan Carlos Ferrero, Federer, and Andy Roddick all won their first major titles) that multiple first-time Grand Slam winners have been crowned in a single season due to Stan Wawrinka's win at the 2014 Australian Open. Nishikori and Čilić were also the two lowest-ranked seeds to reach the US Open final since Pete Sampras won the title in 2002 as 17th seed. Čilić eventually beat Nishikori 6–3, 6–3, 6–3 to become the second Croatian to win a Grand Slam men's singles title after his coach Goran Ivanišević triumphed at 2001 Wimbledon.

Women's Singles[modifier | modifier le code]

Serena Williams was the two-time defending champion and successfully defended her title, defeating Caroline Wozniacki in the final, 6–3, 6–3. Williams did not lose a set in the entire tournament and did not lose more than three games in any set. This was Williams' 18th Grand Slam singles title, tying the number won by Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. With the victory, Serena tied the open era record of six US Open titles held by Evert. This was Williams' third US Open championship that she competed in without losing a set, also tying Evert. This tournament was the Grand Slam debut of CiCi Bellis, who became the youngest player to win a match at the US Open since 1996 (and the youngest American to do so since 1986) when she defeated the twelfth seed Dominika Cibulková in the first round at the age of 15. All three top seeds (Williams, Simona Halep and Petra Kvitová) were in contention for the World No. 1 ranking at the start of the tournament. Williams retained the top position after Halep and Kvitová both lost in the third round.
