Museum of Youth Illustration[modifier | modifier le code]

The museum of youth illustration, located in Moulins, was created in 2005 by the General Council of the department of Allier. It gathers a collection of original graphic works from the nineteenth century to the present day. It also has a library and a documentation center with a collection of albums (11500 references). Entirely dedicated to the art of children's images, it is one of the few places in Europe where youth illustrations are preserved and displayed. This museum's mission is to enrich and preserve a collection of original illustrations and to promote and spread this applied art to the greatest number.

The museum has also awarded Illustration Awards since 2008.

History[modifier | modifier le code]

Located in the historic heart of the city of Moulins, the Museum of Youth Illustration is part of a mansion: the Hôtel de Mora. This building, built in 1750 by the family Cadier de Veauce, housed the Desrosiers print shops from 1836 to 1858. The hotel inherits its name from one of its nineteenth-century owners, a Spanish Marquis in exile, Pascal Moreno de Mora, who did the enhancement and landscaping work that gives the building its current appearance.

Collections[modifier | modifier le code]

In the files of museum, more than 3500 original boards are preserved as well as 6000 works in the documentary library. First of all, works which are subsequent to 1950 that correspond to the first acquisition policy of the museum with illustrators such as Gerda Muller, Yvan Pommaux, Letizia Galli, Nathalie Novi, George Lemoine, Kitty Crowther and many more. Since 2011, the museum, while continuing its policy of expansion of contemporary collections, has launched a new vision of acquisitions, devoted to the originals of the 19th and early 20th centuries: Rodolphe Töpffer, Maurice Boutet Monvel, Germaine Bouret, Jacqueline Duhême, Gustave Doré...

Museum visit[modifier | modifier le code]

The ground floor offers a ludic course dedicated to the history of the youth illustration and its techniques... In the "storybook box" for children, the illustrations in the form of scrolls unroll to the sound of the story told aloud and in music. A reading room open to the public allows the visitors to discover the works of the backlist books. At the end of the visit, and because the creation is at the heart of the establishment, two workshops are available to the visitor, one traditional and the other fitted with touchscreens allowing illustrate the history of its choice.

On the first floor, the museum offers temporary exhibitions that allows you to discover the world of an illustrator or that develop certain themes of the youth literature using a thematic path.

Throughout the year, the public service offers classes in artistic practice, guided tours, workshops, readings and book signings for individuals and schoolchildren.
