Paradise Lost est un groupe de gothic metal britannique originaire du Yorkshire fondé en 1988. Jouant à l'origine un doom metal teinté de death, ils ont su faire évoluer leur style au fil des albums.
Paradise Lost est l'un des trois grands groupes qui ont popularisé le doom metal/death metal (les deux autres étant Anathema et My Dying Bride). Le groupe est presque inconnu dans son propre pays mais est extrêmement populaire dans le reste de l'Europe, notamment en Grèce et en Allemagne.
Souvent crédité pour avoir été l'un des pionniers du gothic metal, le groupe a régulièrement étonné la critique et les fans par son goût pour l'innovation et l'expérimentation, une volonté de travailler avec des producteurs d'autres horizons musicaux et un refus de se répéter d'un album à l'autre. Cette approche, bien que critiquée, leur a permis de conquérir au fur et à mesure de nouveaux fans.
Le groupe a versé successivement dans le doom/death, le gothic metal puis un rock/electro aux ambiances proches de ce que faisait le groupe Depeche Mode dans les années 1980 avant de verser à nouveau dans le gothic metal.
La formation de Paradise Lost est remarquable par sa longévité pour un groupe de heavy metal, seul le poste de batteur ayant changé. La quasi-totalité des chansons du groupe sont écrites par Nick Holmes (le chanteur du groupe) et Greg Mackintosh (le guitariste compositeur).
