Le Britannia Trophy est une récompense britannique décernée par le Royal Aero Club aux aviateurs ayant accompli les performances les plus méritoires dans le domaine de l'aviation au cours de l'année précédente[1].

Historique[modifier | modifier le code]

En 1911, Horatio Barber, membre fondateur du Royal Aero Club, reçoit 100 livres sterling pour un vol commercial. Ne voulant pas ternir son statut d'amateur, il offre l'argent au club pour le trophée[2].

Le premier prix a été décerné en 1913 au capitaine C.A.H Longcroft du Royal Flying Corps pour un vol sans escale de Montrose à Farnborough à bord d'un Royal Aircraft Factory BE2a[2]. Le trophée n'a pas été décerné tous les ans, en particulier pendant la première et la deuxième guerre mondiale, et a été attribué conjointement et à des équipes, ainsi qu'à des individus.

En 1952, le Royal Aero Club a remis des plaques à tous les détenteurs survivants, qui n'avaient auparavant détenu le trophée que pendant un an et n'avaient pas reçu de souvenir permanent[2].

The wind chill at the surface of the North Pole was -40°C. causing all of the fuel cylinder gauges to freeze and one of the burners to freeze in the on position. After a distance of 41.2Nm, the crew landed, put up an emergency shelter and made a nice cup of tea.

On his first journey in 2016 he flew round Africa solo in a VFR helicopter through 23 different countries, completing 16,600 nm in 73 days and setting three world records.

For his second journey in 2017 with Matthew Gallacher, they travelled east around the world passing through 42 countries completing 32,000 nm in 121 days, (11,600 nm over water) and setting another five world records.

The third Journey Round started on 2 December 2018 around Latin America.
