- Fondé en 1862, le club adopte un statut professionnel en 1885 et rejoint la League dès sa fondation en 1888.
- En 1910, le club déménage dans son stade actuel, le Meadow Lane. Le premier match se termina par un nul 1-1 face au grand rival Nottingham Forest devant pas moins de 28000 personnes.
