Bronze Age Pervert, également connu sous le nom de BAP[1], est un philosophe et une personnalité d'internet d'extrême droite. Selon Politico et The Atlantic, Costin Alamariu (né en 1980), un philosophe roumano-américain, est la personne derrière le pseudonyme[2],[3]. En août 2023, il comptait plus de 120 000 abonnés sur Twitter[3].

En 2023, Politico a identifié l'écrivain Costin Alamariu comme la personne derrière le pseudonyme de Bronze Age Pervert, faisant référence à d'autres articles et podcasts qui l'avaient précédemment identifié. Selon Politico, ni Alamariu ni BAP n'ont répondu aux demandes de commentaires, et Alamariu n'a pas nié être BAP lorsque l'association a été faite auparavant[2],[3].
Alamariu est né en Roumanie en 1980 et a immigré aux États-Unis avec sa famille en 1990. Il est sorti diplômé du Newton South High School près de Boston en 1998 (où il est dans la même promotion que l'acteur B. J. Novak avec qui il réalise un canular en enregistrant de faux audioguides au musée des Beaux-Arts de Boston[4],[5]), puis a obtenu un bachelor en mathématiques au MIT en 2002. Après un court passage en banque d'investissement, Alamariu retourne à l'université et obtient un master en philosophie de Columbia en 2006. Il reçoit enfin un doctorat en philosophie politique à Yale en 2015, avec une thèse intitulée "The Problem of Tyranny and Philosophy in the Thought of Plato and Nietzsche" rédigée sous la supervision de Bryan Garsten[6]. Alamariu effectue ensuite un post-doc à Emory entre 2015 et 2016[2],[3].
Quand il est doctorant à Yale, Alamariu est rarement présent sur le campus de l'université afin de notamment traverser l'Argentine en camionnette. Durant son passage à Emory, Alamariu est constamment en conflit avec l'administration de l'université : il refuse de fournir son adresse au département des ressources humaines, il cesse de venir en présentiel à l'université et tente de dispenser ses cours via e-mail. Après son post-doc à Emory, Alamariu quitte les Etats-Unis et vit successivement au Brésil, en Hongrie, en Espagne, au Japon et à Hong-Kong[2],[3].
Œuvre[modifier | modifier le code]
En 2018, Bronze Age Pervert publie le livre Bronze Age Mindset. Michael Anton, conseiller du Président Donald Trump, publie une critique élogieuse du livre dans la revue Claremont Review of Books[7]. Le livre est un succès en termes de ventes : il se classe dans le top 150 de l'ensemble du catalogue Amazon et dans le top 3 de la catégorie "Grèce antique"[2],[3]. Blake Smith, professeur d'histoire à l'Université de Chicago, relève l'influence de Leo Strauss sur l'ouvrage de BAP[8].
Selon le New York Times, Bronze Age Pervert fait partie des intellectuels contribuant à la radicalisation du Parti Républicain et du mouvement conservateur aux Etats-Unis[9].

He self-published a book in 2018, “Bronze Age Mindset,” which follows Friedrich Nietzsche and other authors beloved by the European far right in proclaiming that Western civilization itself is on the verge of collapse, its greatest achievements far in the past, its present a “garbage world” in an advanced state of decay.
All around us, Mr. Alamariu declares, greatness and beauty are under assault. Who are its enemies? Women, for one. (“It took 100 years of women in public life for them to almost totally destroy a civilization.”) Then there’s belief in democratic equality. (“I believe that democracy is the final cause of all the political problems I describe.”)
But blame must most of all be laid at the feet of the creature Mr. Alamariu calls the “bugman,” a term he uses to describe a majority of human beings alive today. This insectlike infestation venerates mediocrity and is “motivated by a titanic hatred of the well-turned-out and beautiful.”
Mr. Alamariu proposes breeding great men of strength who model themselves on pirates, disregarding laws and norms, plundering and taking anything they want and ultimately installing themselves as absolute rulers over the rest of us. Mr. Trump, Mr. Alamariu believes, has pointed us in the right direction. But the former president is only the beginning, he writes. “Now imagine a man of Trump’s charisma, but who is not merely beholden to the generals, but one of them, and able to rule and intimidate them as well as seduce the many. … Caesars and Napoleons are sure to follow.”
In a recent essay, Mr. Alamariu wrote: “I believe in fascism or ‘something worse’ …. I believe in rule by a military caste of men who would be able to guide society toward a morality of eugenics.”
It’s hard to know how seriously to take all of this. Mr. Alamariu, who has a Ph.D. in political science from Yale, writes in such a cartoonish way and laces his outrageous pronouncements with so much irony and humor, not to mention deliberate spelling and syntax errors, that he often seems to be playing a joke on his reader. »
