Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II (né le 9 décembre 1932) est un trompettiste américain né à Detroit, Michigan. Il a joué avec Lionel Hampton avant de quitter l'école ; il reçoit plusieurs diplômes de musique, et alors qu'il est encore à l'école de Manhattan, il remplace Lee Morgan auprès de Art Blakey et les Jazz Messengers, ainsi que brièvement Clifford Brown auprès de Max Roach, puis joue avec de très nombreux jazzmen, dont John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock et Thelonious Monk.
Dans les années 1970, il s'éloigne du mouvement hard-bop et se tourne vers le jazz fusion, le jazz-funk, le soul-jazz et le rhythm and blues. Il produit alors Black Byrd, avec les Mizell Brothers ; cet album connaît un grand succès, tout comme les albums qui suivirent avec les Mizell Brothers Places and Spaces, Steppin' Into Tomorrow et Street Lady.
