Beta Cancri (β Cnc / β Cancri, Bêta du Cancer) est l'étoile la plus brillante de la constellation zodiacale du Cancer. Elle porte également le nom traditionnel Altarf ou encore al-Tarf (mot arabe pour « la pointe ») ou Tarf[8]. Elle est située à environ 290 années-lumière de la Terre.
La composante primaire, β Cancri A, est une étoile géante orange, précisément du type K4 III[3], de magnitude apparente +3,50 et de magnitude absolue -1,31 dans le visible[5]. Elle possède une faible compagne, de 14e magnitude, β Cancri B, située à 29 secondes d'arc de la primaire.[réf. nécessaire]
Beta Cancri A est l'objet primaire d'un système planétaire dont l'unique objet secondaire connu est Beta Cancri b, une planète confirmée[9],[10].
