Les Megalosauroidea constituent un super-famille éteinte et paraphylétique[3] de théropodes ayant vécu du Jurassique moyen au Crétacé supérieur (Cénomanien). Leur distribution est mondiale puisqu'ils sont connus sur l'ensemble des continents mis à part l'Océanie et l'Antarctique où leurs restes n'ont pas encore été découverts. Ce groupe comprend certains des plus grands prédateurs terrestres à avoir vécu sur notre planète (Spinosaurus aegyptiacus) mais les membres de ce clade sont généralement de taille moyenne.

Squelette céphalique
Même si aucun crâne complet de Megalosauroidea n'est connu, des restes bien préservés de Megalosauridae (Eustreptospondylus, Torvosaurus et Dubreuillosaurus), de Piatnitzkysauridae (Piatnitzkysaurus) et de Spinosauridae (Baryonyx et Suchomimus) nous permettent de bien connaître leur structure crânienne[4].
