Coventry City Football Club
Le Coventry City Football Club est un club de football anglais fondé en 1883. Le club, basé à Coventry, évolue pour la saison 2014-2015 en League One (3ème division anglaise).
Repères historiques
Fondé en 1883, le club adopte le statut professionnel en 1898. Le club porte alors le nom de Singer FC, du nom de l’usine où il fut fondé. Le club est rebaptisé Coventry City FC en 1898 et rejoint la League en 1919 (Division 2). Le club entretient une forte rivalité avec son voisin direct, Wolverhampton Wanderers, qu'il a souvent retrouvé en Championship.
En 2012 le club est relégué en League One, suite à son avant-dernière place en League Championship à la fin de la saison 2011-2012. La dernière fois que le club a côtoyé la D3, c'était lors de la saison 1963-1964 à l'issue de laquelle il fut promu en D2.
Le club a pour particularité, d'accueillir traditionnellement, une forte communauté irlandaise.

Le titre le plus important remporté par le club est la Coupe d'Angleterre 1987. En finale, Coventry s'impose à Wembley face aux Tottenham Hotspur sur le score de 3-2 après prolongation. Après avoir marqué deux buts par Dave Bennett (en) et Keith Houchen (en), c'est l'adversaire Gary Mabbutt qui donne la victoire à Coventry sur un but contre son camp. Les clubs anglais étant sous le coup d'une suspension internationale suite au drame du Heysel, Coventry ne pourra pas disputer la Coupe d'Europe des vainqueurs de coupe la saison suivante.
En championnat, le titre le plus important du Coventry City FC est une victoire en 1967 dans la Football League Second Division, soit le deuxième niveau dans la hiérarchie du football anglais. Dans le championnat de troisième niveau, le club est vice-champion puis champion de Football League Third Division South en 1934 et 1936 respectivement, puis champion de la Football League Third Division en 1964. En 1959, Coventry est également vice-champion de Football League Fourth Division, soit la quatrième division.
