John Christopher Williams est un guitariste australien né le à Melbourne en Australie.

John Williams est actuellement l'un des plus grands guitaristes classiques au monde. Il a commencé son apprentissage de la musique avec son père, Len Williams, lui-même guitariste qui a beaucoup contribué à la diffusion de la pratique de l'instrument en Australie et grand pédagogue. Il savait " diffuser la connaissance de la technique de la guitare avec cohérence pour les étudiants débutants ou avancés, qu'il s'agisse d'un enfant ou d'un adulte". John Williams lui attribue une grande partie de sa réussite. Il a ainsi déclaré: "Mon père était un personnage très énergique et, en ce qui concerne la guitare et moi, il était très persuasif, si bien que je n'ai jamais eu à m'entraîner. Mais il avait cette façon de faire sentir aux gens qu'ils devaient le faire. Mon père m'a bien enseigné et c'est juste que j'ai eu de la chance, vraiment de la chance. J'ai été incroyablement bien formé."[1]

À l'âge de douze ans, il se rend en Espagne pour étudier avec Andrés Segovia. Il intègre par la suite le Royal College of Music de Londres.

Williams est surtout connu comme guitariste classique, mais il a exploré beaucoup de traditions musicales différentes. Il a ainsi formé un duo de guitares classiques avec Julian Bream, mais a également collaboré avec des musiciens venant d'autres domaines comme le guitariste de flamenco Paco Peña ou le groupe de musique andine Inti Illimani, et a été membre du groupe Sky.

"Poet laureate of the guitar" (N. Y. Herald Tribune), il a, notamment, enregistré des œuvres de Paganini, Falla, Villa-lobos, Granados, Castelnuovo-Tedesco et Dodgson. (CBS SBRG 72348)

Il a rencontré un succès international grâce à son enregistrement de Cavatina, thème du film de Michael Cimino Voyage au bout de l'enfer (The Deer Hunter, 1978).

Il est également un des patrons de la Campagne de Solidarité pour la Palestine[2].
