Edward Mitchell Bannister, né le à Saint Andrews dans le Nouveau-Brunswick au Canada et mort le à Providence dans l'État américain Rhode Island, est un peintre tonaliste noir canadien-américain.
Biographie
Enfance et formation
Edward Mitchell Bannister[1] est né le 2 novembre 1828 à Saint Andrews dans le Nouveau-Brunswick au Canada, après l'abolition de l'esclavage[2]. Selon le Bénézit, son père venait de la Barbade[3] et sa mère était d'ascendance écossaise[2],[4], mais d'après le livre African American Art and Artists, sa mère serait née comme lui à Saint Andrews[5]. Il est orphelin à l'âge de 6 ans[6].
Il déménage en Nouvelle-Angleterre à la fin des années 1840, où il est restera pour le reste de sa vie[réf. nécessaire].
Edward Mitchell Bannister étudie la peinture au Boston Studio Building et au Lowell Institute (en)[7].
Mariage et carrière de peintre
En 1857, Edward Mitchell Bannister épouse Christiana Carteaux[1].
Son style de peinture est influencé par l'École de Barbizon[8].
Edward Mitchell Bannister est le cofondateur du Providence Art Club (en)[9] à Providence.
Décès et inhumation
Edward Mitchell Bannister est mort le 9 janvier 1901 à Providence, dans l’État de Rhode Island[2], d'un infarctus du myocarde[10].
Il repose au cimetière historique de Providence, le North Burial Ground[11].
