La 21e division SS « Skanderbeg » ou la division « Skanderbeg » (appellation allemande complète : la 21. Waffen-Gebirgs-Division der SS « Skanderbeg » (albanische Nr. 1) ; traduction littérale : la « 21e division de montagne de la Waffen-SS « Skanderbeg » (albanaise no 1) ») est l'une des 38 divisions de la Waffen-SS durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Elle a été créée sur ordre de Heinrich Himmler en , à l'instigation du mufti de Jérusalem, Hadj Amin al-Husseini et nommée ainsi en hommage à Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg.

La division a été créée à partir d'un bataillon d'Albanais ethniques qui avaient combattu des partisans yougoslaves dans l'Est de la Bosnie alors qu'ils appartenaient à la 13e division SS « Handschar ».

Création et engagements

La 21. Waffen-Gebirgs-Division der SS Skanderbeg fut créée en avril 1944 au Kosovo (Prishtina) après décision du SS-Führungs-Hauptamt en mars précédent. Elle recruta essentiellement dans les villages albanais du Kosovo et du nord de la Macédoine, profita de transferts de la gendarmerie albanaise et de la Deuxième Ligue de Prizren. Comprenant quelque 9 000 hommes (officiers compris) dont un encadrement de Volksdeutsche des Balkans (en provenance des divisions SS Handschar et Prinz Eugen), elle fut jugée opérationnelle en juillet suivant et engagée directement, bien qu'incomplète, dans les opérations antipartisans au nord du Monténégro (Draufgänger & Rübezahl).[réf. souhaitée]

Le 28 juillet 1944, un de ses détachements massacre les 800 habitants du village de Velika, et 673 civils dans les hameaux des alentours[1].

À la suite des multiples pertes et désertions de l'été 1944 (plus de 7 000 déserteurs), la division est refondue puis incorporée en tant de Kampfgruppe Skanderbeg au sein des restes de la 7e division SS Prinz Eugen avant d'être engagée dans la bataille de Belgrade (octobre 1944) puis dans les opérations défensives en Bosnie-Herzégovine à l'automne 1944-hiver 1945. En , les restes du Kampfgruppe Skanderbeg sont dispersés à la fois au nord de la Yougoslavie et sur le front de l'Oder où ils disparaissent. La plupart des éléments albanais ayant déserté au Kosovo se retrouveront dans la révolte albanaise du premier trimestre 1945, révolte matée par l'armée yougoslave.[réf. souhaitée]

Caractéristiques

  • Origine : seconde grande unité musulmane, elle recruta jusqu’en septembre 6 500 Albanais du Kosovo.

Son nom provient du héros national albanais qui au XVe siècle sut conquérir par les armes une indépendance éphémère contre les Turcs.

  • Terrains d’opérations : Monténégro, Sandjak et sud de la Serbie contre les partisans de Tito. Devenue un simple Kampfgruppe, ses membres se battent encore en Bosnie en 1944-1945 au sein de la division « Prinz Eugen » et sur le front de l'Oder en au sud de Stettin.
