Les variables de type Z Andromedae, dont Z And elle-même, show irregular variation including outbursts de plusieurs magnitudes at intervals of years. Typically they consist of a red giant and a white dwarf in an orbit of several years. The red giant wind is ionised by the white dwarf which causes nebular emission which varies in intensity slightly during the orbit. This is known as the quiescent phase. During active phases, the white dwarf increases in size and cools, devenant beaucoup plus lumineuse. The binary system as a whole increases in brightness by 2-4 magnitudes[8].
Spectre
Le spectre of Z Andromedae has been recognised as extremely peculiar since the early 20th century. Early spectra during a bright period, showing only raies d'émission against a red continuum, were interpreted as a star embedded in dense nebulosity[11]. As the star's brightness faded, the spectrum lost the high excitation "nebular" lines and developed raies d'absorption avec des profils P Cygni. These spectra were readily identified as being due to a hot nova-like star with a cool companion[12].
Jets bipolaires
Suite à l'explosion de 2006, les raies d'émission de Balmer de l'hydrogène included faint wings at a velocity of ± 1150 km/s. These are thought to be collimated jets along the axis of the system. Extended radio outflows had previously been seen during the long 2000-2002 outbursts. It is thought that the jets are only present during bright outbursts[14].
