Spideo is a content recommendation and analytics provider that uses semantic-based discovery to deliver personalized viewing suggestions (movies, TV shows and programs) based on profile, theme, mood, related content and social trends. The company is one of the leaders in recommendation and discovery, with services such as CanalPlay, Arte, Fandango, Bouyghes' Bbox Miami[1] or Iflix using its solutions daily.

History[modifier | modifier le code]

Spideo was founded by Thibault D'Orso, Gabriel Mandelbaum and Paul de Monchy.

In 2011, Spideo announced the launch of its first semantic recommendation engine dedicated to VOD, while being implemented on the CanalPlay platform[2].

In 2012, Spideo widened its field of expertise with a recommendation engine for TV.

In 2013, M-GO/Fandango and Spideo signed a deal to integrate the recommendation solutions on the US Platform.

In 2014, Spideo officialized the launch of a solution (based on Android TV Platorm) working on any format, from VOD and on-demand TV to live TV.

In 2015, Spideo started working on a semantic-based recommendation engine for advertisements, called Adgraph[3], and released its B2C app, Spideo Movie Discovery. The app was one of the few being integrated into the new Apple TV[4][5].

In 2016, Spideo deployed its solutions for live TV, cable satellite TV, VOD and SVOD in 4 continents. The company's recommendation modules are currently available in 10 languages.

Spideo's approach to recommendation and Featured Products[modifier | modifier le code]

Spideo's approach to recommendation differs from collaborative-filtering. Spideo offers semantic-based recommendation[6]. They created their own semantically-enhanced metadata with themes and moods using natural language expressions to describe content. The idea is to recreate a conversation with the user[7][8].

Main Products[modifier | modifier le code]

Related Content: Spideo maps content and creates content data fingerprints in order to provide connections between movies and TV shows sharing the most common features (emotions, concepts, themes, audiovisual experiences) among all available titles[9].

Mood-based discovery: In order to recommend contents to first time users but also to help users escape from their viewing habits, Spideo developed the mood-based discovery. The Mood-based discovery delivers recommendations based on immediate and specific moods, which can be combined[10].

Profile-based suggestions: The Spideo profiling system provides personalized recommendations based on the user’s activity: watched content, ratings, page views, favorites, playlists, and other configurable events.

Spideo offers several ways to supply the profile-analysis, from classical ratings to The Movie Battle[11].

Semantic Search: Spideo’s semantic technology predicts search queries, interprets the user’s intent and provides conversational or dialogue-based search results[12].

Analytics: The analytics platform measures the performance of recommendation, helps to manage user segments for more targeted CRM and to create specific business rules[13]. The use of semantics helps to draw clear conclusions on the use of the different recommendation products, the transformation rate, the viewing trends, the most recommended movies, etc[14][15]. This feature aims at enhancing the customers' content strategy and increasing their revenue[16].

In addition to these B2B features, Spideo launched its B2C app[17][18] in 2013[19]. The app was made available on Iphone in 2015[20].

Rewards[modifier | modifier le code]

In september 2013, Spideo received the Best Connected Application of the Year price at the IBC connected world[21].

In 2014, Spideo won the Young Innovative Company Label[22], from the Paris Grand Prix de l'Innovation[23][24].

In 2015, Spideo won the Smart Startup Price[25][26]. The price rewards the most innovative startup of the year[27].

In 2016, Spideo was chosen as a 2016 Red Herring Top 100 Europe Winner[28][29].
