The Foundation's activities[modifier | modifier le code]

Malaika's activities currently focus on three areas with a strong economic and social impact: Malaika school, a modern school for young girls, opening in 2011; the Kalebuka Football for Hope Center, opened in partnership with FIFA; and the development of local infrastructure.

Malaika School[modifier | modifier le code]

"You educate a girl, you educate a nation" ; she said in an interview with CNN. The school offers girls a strong, holistic curriculum that includes classes in English and French, math, science, health and civics, as well as art, music and drama programs, as well as two healthy meals a day and health care several times a year. Starting with 104 girls, Malaika now supports 370 students.

Kalebuka Football for Hope Center[modifier | modifier le code]

Furthermore, in partnership with the International Football Federation, the Malaika Foundation opened the Kalebuka Football for Hope Center. The center offers literacy classes for youth and adults, computer classes and malaria awareness sessions.

Water and Health Projects[modifier | modifier le code]

In addition, on a social level and in partnership with the Voss Foundation and the Vinmart Foundation, Malaika has built wells at the school, the community center and in the village of Kalebuka, which today provides drinking water to more than 20,000 people. In collaboration with the C.U.R.E. project, Malaika has also facilitated the shipment of 15 containers of medical equipment to hospitals in the region, helping to lower the mortality rate by providing appropriate patient care. They also distributed more than 9,000 anti-malaria nets, which are very deadly in the region. The importance of this work was highlighted after Myriam, one of the girls attending school, lost her life to malaria. The foundation provides school, health and logistical material to Congolese NGOs and orphanages, as meals.

Wash Project (Water sanitation and Hygiene promotion)[modifier | modifier le code]

In order to make a living from local crops, the foundation has initiated an agricultural project in the vicinity of the school, the products of which will be made available to the school canteen. The goal is to ensure that these programs are sustainable and community-driven over the long term.
