La liste des municipalités de Géorgie recense la totalité des 535 municipalités incorporées dans l'État américain de Géorgie en date de janvier 2018[1]. Elles sont classées par ordre alphabétique dans un tableau triable selon leur type, leur nom officiel et les données démographiques et géographiques issues du recensement de 2010 visant à refléter leur place en matière de superficie et de population.

La Géorgie est divisée en 159 comtés, ce qui fait d'elle l'État au plus grand nombre de comtés après le Texas (254 comtés) et compte 535 municipalités[1]. Les municipalités de Géorgie sont toutes organisées en tant que « municipalités à charte » (charter municipalities) ou « cités à charte » (charter cities)[2], c'est-à-dire, régies par leur propre charte (à l'inverse des « municipalités de droit commun » (general-law municipalities) dont le statut est déterminé par le droit de l'État).

La plus grande municipalité en termes de population est Atlanta, qui est également sa capitale, avec 420 003 habitants et la plus petite municipalité est Edge Hill, avec 24 habitants[3]. La plus grande municipalité en termes de superficie est Augusta, une « ville-comté consolidée », qui s'étend sur 783,4 km2. Edge Hill et Santa Claus se disputent la place de la plus petite municipalité, faisant toutes deux 0,47 km2 chacune[3].

Création et statut[modifier | modifier le code]

Les municipalités de Géorgie sont créées par l'Assemblée générale de Géorgie. Depuis 1963, la loi impose qu'une communauté compte au moins 200 habitants pour devenir une municipalité. Elles peuvent être appelées city ou town, sans incidence sur leur statut[1].

Le gouvernement d'un comté et d'une municipalité peuvent fusionner pour créer une « ville-comté consolidée » (consildated cities) disposant d'un « gouvernement unifié » (unified government)[1]. C'est le cas de huit d'entre elles : Athens (comté de Clarke), Augusta (comté de Richmond), Columbus (comté de Muscogee), Georgetown (comté de Quitman), Statenville (comté d'Echols), Macon (comté de Bibb), Cusseta (comté de Chattahoochee) et Preston (comté de Webster).

Il faut distinguer les municipalités, qui sont par définition incorporées et disposent d'un gouvernement propre, des uncorporated communities et des census-designated places (CDP) qui ne le sont pas. C'est pour cela que les sièges de certains comtés n'apparaissent pas dans cette liste, comme Knoxville (siège du comté de Crawford) ou encore Appling et Evans, qui se partagent le siège du comté de Columbia.
