Robert W. Paul
Robert W. Paul est un producteur, réalisateur, directeur de la photographie et acteur britannique né le 3 octobre 1869 à Highbury en Londres (Royaume-Uni), décédé le 28 mars 1943 à Putney dans la même ville (Royaume-Uni). Premier producteur de films anglais[1].
Biographie
Robert William Paul est un producteur, réalisateur, acteur et directeur de la photographie britannique. Il est né le 3 octobre 1869 à Highbury et mort le 28 mars 1943 à Londres. Il fabrique en 1895 une caméra, la Kinetic avec l'ingénieur Birt Acres et commence aussitôt à tourner des bobineaux de quelques dizaines de secondes. Grande figure pionnière du cinéma et "Father of British film industry", il avait débuté sa carrière dans un magasin de matériel électrique avant de se mettre à son compte en tant que fabriquant et inventeur. Fasciné par le kinétoscope d'Edison, il est l'un des premiers cinéastes primitifs à s’intéresser au langage cinématographique et à discerner le potentiel comique du cinéma. En 1896, il fait construire un studio et pose un brevet sur le théâtrographe (une réplique de l'invention des frères Lumière) que Georges Méliès s'empressera d'acquérir pour ses propres productions.
