Milkchoco FPS is a free-to-play online mobile first-person shooter video game developed and published by the Korean game developer GameParadiso. The matches are played 5 vs 5: "Milk" versus "Choco" team (white vs brown characters). The player's color is randomly chosen in a match. The avatars look like plump babies making childish noises, yet they use realistic weapons. The game is rated PEGI 10. The tutorial[1] explains why Milk and Choco are enemies: according to Milk, the milk should come before the chocolate cereals, and Choco argues it's the opposite.

It was officially launched on March 14th, 2017 on IOS and Android. On October 18th, 2019, it was released on Nintendo Switch for 28,99$, and on Playstation for the same price on October 7th, 2021. On December 21st of the same year, it was released on Steam, where it's also free to play. As of October 2022, the game has about 30 million downloads on mobile.

All the money earned by the player's in-game purchases goes to charities, mostly to help children and hospitals in Benin[2].

Gameplay[modifier | modifier le code]

Heroes[modifier | modifier le code]

22 different characters ("heroes") can be played, each with a unique ability.

All heroes and abilities can be seen in-game on the developer's official YouTube channel. Below is a brief sum-up of the heroes.

Weapons[modifier | modifier le code]

Each character has a main weapon and a secondary one, plus the ability to throw grenades. The main weapon categories are: Sniper, Assault rifle (AR), Submachine gun (SMG), Crossbow and Shotgun. Secondary weapons can be a Pistol or a Melee weapon (such as a saber). Each character has its own set of weapons: if a player buys a sniper on Assault, the weapon can't be used with Medic unless i was bought with Medic as well. A player can thus buy each weapon a maximum of 22 times. A player's kill/death/assist ratio is called KDA (assit means helping a teammate killing someone; it counts as a kill for the ratio). For example, if a player kills in average 2 other players before dying, they will have a KDA of 2.0. Each player has only one KDA.

Some weapons can only be unlocked by entering a clan (see "Clan system" below).

Currencies[modifier | modifier le code]

Gold and Exp[modifier | modifier le code]

Each normal game gives the player 10 "Gold" coins and 10 "Experience" (exp) points by default. The player's performance adds up to 25 Exp and gold, for a total of 35 of each. Experience simply displays the ranks shown here. Reaching the maximum rank takes roughly 100 hours worth of playing (without using any boosts).

Gold is used to unlock weapons and different characters.

Gems[modifier | modifier le code]

Gems can be used to buy pieces of costumes for the characters: head, body or back costume. Some special weapons also unlock with gems. A player can also double their gold and exp rewards for a set time (1 day/1 week/1 month), by using their gems to buy a boost. Gems can also be used to change name, to reset the KDA, to directly buy gold or clan gold (see below).

Clan system[modifier | modifier le code]

A player can join a clan to unlock special weapons and costumes. Clans battle each other in Clan wars to win clan EXP and clan gold. Clan gold is the currency used by a clan to unlock new levels, special weapons and costumes. 1 victory in a clan war match gives the clan 10-15 exp and each player has 8-12 clan coins. They can then donate those coins to the clan's common wallet. Here is a sum up of each clan level, what they each cost and what items they unlock. The first clan ever made was the developer's clan.

Star coins[modifier | modifier le code]

The Star League is a competitive game mode launched in January 2021. It consists in normal games, except each character can only be played by 1 team member. A separate system of points is used to rank players. Players can accumulate points for 1 month, after what they receive a number of Star coins, which they can use to buy specific costumes. Only the top 100 players of each server have access to the Star League's back costumes, making those items the rarest in the game.

Maps and objectives[modifier | modifier le code]

The players can fight in 8 different maps, as well as the Battle royale map. Some other maps were deleted, but can still be played in a private room (friendly match). All matches last 6 minutes, except Battle royales. The game ends either after 6 minutes, or when a team completed the objective. The active maps and their objectives are:

Escort: Kill the enemy snail while defending yours. Each snail has 2,500 hit points and crosses the map during 1 minute, 4 times in total. The first team dealing 10,000 damage to the enemy snail wins the game.

Assault (old and new map): players have to reach and defend a point in the map where they "pump" some points. It takes 6 seconds to have 1 point. The first team to have 10 points wins the game. Only one team at a time can pump.

Death maps( 3 different) : first team killing enemy players 20 times wins the game.

Capture the milk: similar to the game capture the flag. Teams have to reach the other end of the map to steal milk or chocolate jars and bring them back to their side, while defending their own jars. The first team to bring back 4 jars wins the game.

Kill devil: devil-shaped targets regularly pop up for 7 seconds, each with 200 hp. The first team to shoot 15 targets wins the game.

Reception[modifier | modifier le code]

The game has generally positive reviews, with an average grade of 4.2/5 on Google Play. It won the 2017 Google Play awards for the best "People's choice" game in Korea, as well as the best indie game in Korea and Japan[3].

Despite not officially launching in China, the game also ranked #2 on the Chinese mobile game platform TapTap[4].

The game's mechanics are simple and allow fast-paced action and lightning-fast trick-shots. The most popular consists in shooting twice in a row with a Sniper and a Pistol.

However, multiple glitches and bugs were reported, as well as hacks, leading to an anti-hack campaign form the developers, who banned a number of accounts[5] and despite the game's anti-cheat system, Xigncode. As of October 2022, IOS players can still cheat by turning on their internet connection, killing enemies during a few seconds and coming back online.

Updates[modifier | modifier le code]

Apart from comics competitions and costumes, the developers are keeping updates rare, about one major update every year and a half. Valentine's day[6], Halloween[7] and Christmas[8] events typically see new costumes and special prizes. As of October 2022, the last new weapon was added to the game in March 2020. The current version has the number 1.26.0.

Downfall[modifier | modifier le code]

In 2020, the developers closed their official website, as well as their merchandizing website. They also closed a dozen of the game's servers: the 3 global servers, the 2nd European server, 3 in Japan, Mexico and Korea. On February 3rd, 2020, the official discord server was closed as well. The Milkchoco World cup, which had been sponsored by the developers in 2018 and 2019, didn't take place.

Community[modifier | modifier le code]

The game hat a lot of success in South-East Asia (especially Korea and Japan), and Mexico, as well as small groups of active players in the USA and Europe.

The community was mostly active on the former Japanese social media Lobi (which ended its service on July 31st, 2022 and merged with the platform "Yay!").
