- Could I (please) get a quick translation of the section on similar looking species (the one with the RES)? I can clean it up after that. Just get the basics? I will add this content into "my" en article!69.255.27.249 (d) 23 novembre 2011 à 20:40 (CET)

"=== Similar species === The painted turtle may be confused with Trachemys scripta. This turtle has a brown-green upper shell and a yellow-orange bottom shell. But the main difference which distinguish it from the painted turtle is the yellow (Trachemys scripta scripta and Trachemys scripta troostii) or red-orange (Trachemys scripta elegans) mark behind his eyes. This mark could disapear when the turtle get older, and she is generally not visible on the older specimens." Excuse my english, and thanks for your very nice article.--Ben23 [Meuh!] 23 novembre 2011 à 23:28 (CET)
Thank you. I did huge work getting images donated, contacting researchers, getting Oregon to donate the video, etc. It made me proud to wander over here and see that you had translated it. :-) TCO (d) 29 novembre 2011 à 04:43 (CET)
A new article to translate if you want
[modifier le code]This might interest you. Very pretty page in some ways. Then again, it is sort of an aspect of Americana, so perhaps less relevant to the French. But it is a Featured List with a lot of article tendancies and lots of cool animal pics. And well constructed tables and images and the like.

- I also included a lot of explanation of the basic concept of a state animal, which non-USAians find baffling.TCO (d) 4 décembre 2011 à 04:18 (CET)

Update needed
[modifier le code]Hi colleagues, i just updated the NL-version of Chrysemys picta because one of the (former) subspecies is elevated to species-level. Chrysemys dorsalis is another species since recently (2014), according to the Reptile Database and -even more important- the new Turtle Species List publiced by the Turtle Taxonomy Working Group wich the Reptile Database is actually based on (considering the turtles and tortoises). I also uploaded a new version of the distribution map (on the right). Greetz, Bart -B kimmel (discuter) 21 mai 2015 à 20:06 (CEST)
The issue of the species "elevation" is discussed in the article, actually, under taxonomy. The situation is that there is controversy over this "elevation". It was proposed to elevate the southern painted turtle. Most researchers are opposed to this. The action by the naming committee was to say that EITHER classification was OK (subspecies or species). Most researchers in the field still advocate the subspecies, for example Ernst the foremost turtle researcher of this species and of turtles in general in the US and even world. The species "elevator" argues the opposite, of course.
But in any case, either classification is OK, per a naming committee. It is NOT a situation of "they said" use a different name, but that bended to allow either classification.
You will find most researchers, current sources, still prefer the traditional 4 subspecies view. In addition, the argument for species elevation (based on mitochondrial DNA variation, a population marker, but not expressing form) was weakened significantly (after the taxonomy argument) when nuclear DNA (the more important one) came back showing much less variation. In addition, there are two previous scientific studies showing interbreeding and hybridization at the boundaries.
In general, I think Wiki needs to take a position of showing scientific consensus. And we have not really shifted from the traditional view yet. Of course, if we eventually do, than Wiki should follow (even if I disagree). But we should not jump onto a new classification that has not really won the battle yet. 96.68.233.42 (discuter) 19 mars 2019 à 14:54 (CET)
