Kousto (artist)[modifier | modifier le code]

Kousto (born 11 November 1991) is a French London-based electronic music producer and artist. He grew up in the South of France on the Côte d'Azur in a town called Le Castellet. In 2018, he moved to London to pursue his music career.

The producer is recognized for his deep house analogue sounds and musical waves. His South of France upbringing is often cited as a key influence for his music.[1]

In the French magazine Liberation, the journalist Patrice Bardot describes Kousto as an artist "on the border between rare groove and deep house... marked by the effervescence of a very organic tone, precisely removed from all clinical studio manipulation."[2]

Career[modifier | modifier le code]

Kousto first emerged in 2018. Performing and producing under a pseudonym, the artist’s name is inspired by the French explorer, Jacques Cousteau.

In 2019, Kousto launched his own record label, Little Foot Records — a platform for the French producer to exercise complete creative freedom. Since, Kousto has released many EPs on the label, the first being Step by Step in 2019.[3]

The Tombolo on Kombava Records was also released in 2019, of which its principal track “Wildin’ Out” led to widespread acknowledgement of Kousto across streaming platforms, particularly on Houseum's YouTube channel.[4]

2020 marked the release of “Guadapipi” on Little Foot Records[5][6][7] — a track tipped as an “Ibiza Dance Floor Moment” by TSHA on BBC1 Radio.[8] Following on from this, Kousto’s summer EP, "The Aquarium Effect", received attention for its hit track “The Job” ft. Aroop Roy which was supported by Disclosure in their Cercle set in August 2020.[9]

With growing recognition, Kousto has been invited to play festivals worldwide including Reading, Latitude, and Wilderness, Citadel, TRNSMT, Good Time[10], Parklife, Wireless.

Kousto has received press coverage as an emerging talent from BBC (Introducing, BBC1 and BBC1 Dance), Resident Advisor, Liberation and Mixmag.[11][12]

In addition, Kousto is supported by many artists including Laurent Garnier and Folamour, the latter who also acts as a production advisor to Kousto. This collaborative relationship has led to Kousto and Folamour playing alongside each other at venues including Phonox (London) and the Rex Club (Paris).[13][14][15]

Early January 2021 Kousto released a new single “Earth Embassy” which received critical acclaim from Magnetic Magazine and Liberation.[16][17] DJ Mag also featured the producer in its February 2021 print and online edition which spotlighted emerging artists.[18]

Kousto is currently in the studio working on multiple projects which will be announced in 2021, ahead of the UK summer festival circuit.[14]
