Pentatonix est un groupe a cappella originaire du Texas composé de 5 chanteurs : Avi Kaplan, Kevin Olusola, Kirstin Maldonado, Mitch Grassi et Scott Hoying.[1][2] Le groupe est le vainqueur de la 3ème saison de l'émission The Sing-Off diffusée sur la chaîne américaine NBC[3]. Ils signent par la suite un contrat avec Sony et gagnent 200 000 dollars[4].

Pentatonix démarre avec 3 amis Kristin, Mitch et Scott à la "Martin High School" à Arlington au Texas[5]. Entendant qu'une radio locale organisait un concours pour rencontrer les acteurs de la série Glee, ils arrangèrent une version trio de la chanson "Telephone" et l'envoyèrent. Bien qu'ils n'aient pas gagné la compétition, cela a attiré l'attention autour de leur école, où le groupe a commencé à se produire. Après que leur version de "Telephone" eu attiré l'attention sur Youtube, ils continuèrent de se produire.[6]

Scott Hoying et Kirstie Maldonado sont diplômés de la "Martin High School" en 2010. Scott a étudié à l'université de Californie du sud (USC) pour obtenir un baccalauréat en musique populaire tandis que Kirstin poursuivie en majeure de Théâtre musical à l'Université d'Oklahoma.[7] Mitch, le plus jeune membre du trio, était encore dans sa dernière année d'école secondaire. Pendant qu'il était à l'USC, Scott a joint un goupe d'a cappella appelé SoCal VoCals. Il a découvert l'émission The Sing Off grâce à un autre membre du groupe et a été encouragé à participer à l'émission. [7]

Suite à l'annonce des auditions de The Sing Off sur la chaine NBC, Scott convaincu Kirstin et Mitch de se joindre à lui mais l'émission requérait au moins 5 membres [8]. Ils ajoutèrent alors deux autres membres, Avi Kaplan et Kevin Olusola et renommèrent le groupe Pentatonix. Scott rencontra Avriel "Avi" à travers un ami commun. Le trio trouva Kevin Olusola grâce à une vidéo sur le site Youtube où il fait du beatboxing tout en jouant du violoncelle[9].

Le quintet auditionne alors pour l'émission et remporte la compétition[10].


En juin 2012, le groupe sort un EP intitulé PTX Vol. 1. Il se classe à la 14e place du Billboard 200[11],[12].

Premier album studio et tournée (2012-aujourd'hui)[modifier | modifier le code]

Scott Hoying et Kirstin Maldonado ont abandonné l'école en vue de gagner The Sing-Off.[29] Après avoir gagné, tous les membres ont déménagé à Los Angeles pour poursuivre leur carrière et enregistrer leur chansons.[30][31] Le but principal du groupe est de devenir le premier groupe mainstream a cappella.[32] En janvier 2012, , Pentatonix commence à réaliser des interprétation de chansons classiques et populaires sur YouTube. Deux de leurs interprétatons, "Somebody That I Used to Know" par Gotye avecKimbra et "We Are Young" par Fun, sont devenue virales sur YouTube.[33][34]

Un maxi anticipé, PTX Vol. 1, est sorti le 26 juin 2012, se classe à la 14e place du Billboard 200(en)[11][35] Ils vendent 20 000 copies la première semaine de la sortie.[36][37] Le groupe prévoit de sortir un album pour noël ainsi qu'un album complet.[38][39][40]

Durant The Sing-Off, Pentatonix visited the administrative offices of The Trevor Project, an American non-profit organization founded in 1998 and the leading national organization focused on suicide prevention efforts among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth.[41] The group shared their experiences of overcoming bullying and recorded a PSA.[42] A 60 seconds spot about The Trevor Project aired during the live finale, but it was met with considerable controversy as the producers edited out LGBTQ references.[43][44]

Pentatonix performed two shows in Rochester, New York, on 11 December 2011 in support of the YellowJackets' "United We Sing" Kenya project.[45] The event, which also featured all-female octet Delilah, was hosted by the YellowJackets at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. Pentatonix was also invited at the A cappella Palooza fundraiser in Boston in April 2012 (together with Ben Folds, Delilah, Dartmouth Aires, North Shore and the Dear Abbeys from Boston University) in an effort to raise funds for the Mass General Cancer Center.[46]
