Dominique Rankin (T8aminik in anicinape language), born in 1947, is a Mamiwinni anicinape (anishnabe) and one of the last Algonquin hereditary chiefs.

Dominique Rankin was born during winter 1947 in a tepee near the Harricana river, James Bay Territory. His parents called him Kapiteotak (the one you can hear crying from afar). He was baptized on June 1st , 1947, and the priest gave him a Christian name, Dominique. Son of Chief Tom Rankin and Emma Moé (known as Mowatt) of the Cree Nation, he was designated at a very young age to succeed his father 1. Taken by the authorities at 8 years old he was sent to Saint-Marc-de-Figuery’s residential school near Amos, where he resided until his teenage years. The Residential school was the site of pervasive violence that deeply affected him 2,3,4.. Helped by Elders and his spiritual guide, William Commanda, he ended up rebuilding himself 5,6.

Commitment Dominique Rankin is dedicated to helping Native people dealing with alcohol, drugs and violence, as well as the many intergenerational issues resulting from the Residential school era 7. He is constantly working to make Quebeckers and Canadians aware of the difficulties faced by Natives 8.

In 2013, together with his partner, Marie-Josée Tardif, he founded Kina8at, a non-profit organization, the Kina8at Cultural Centre (located in La Conception, Quebec) and the Dominique Rankin Foundation, aimed at preserving and transmitting the richness of native culture.

Current functions Dominique Rankin is a member of the Ethics in Action Committee created by the Vatican together with the United Nations, Religions for Peace and the University of Notre-Dame-du-Lac (Indiana), to develop an inter-religious moral consensus on the major challenges of integral sustainable development. Since 2019, he is co-chairman of Religions for Peace, an international organization accredited by the United Nations 9. He has been a Senator of the Native Friendship Centres of Canada since 2003 10.
