ska luxembourg ska ska band

Toxkäpp !

Toxkäpp! means the stubborn ones, are a Two-tone ska band from Luxembourg, Europe, founded on October 7th 1995 in an artist squat the Kulturfabrik . The band started as a punk Rock band with satirical, uncomfortable and socially-aware lyrics sung in their native language, Luxembourgish Lëtzebuergesch, spoken by roughly 700.000 people worldwide.

From Punk to Ska-Punk

After one year and a half playing Punk hymns like “Abriecher”, “Hammelsmarsch”, “Kettenuewen”, “Radikal” they suddenly wrote songs like “SKAndal” (their very first complete two-tone song!), “Baby Boom” and “Duerchschnëtts-Lëtzebuerger” who showed a completely different set of influences: these songs have a clearly identifiable two-tone sound, harking back to the likes of the early 80ies british bands like Madness, The Specials, The Selecter , The Beat and Bad Manners.

Several fans were shocked at this reorientation from Punk to Ska (the lyrics to the song “SKAndal” are precisely about that subject matter), but Toxkäpp! means the stubbern ones ,they stated that they had always loved to play Jamaican-influenced rythms .What began as a simple Punk rock band got technically skilled enough to play ska music. Toxkäpp! soon saw audience flock and attract a larger crowd than before to their gigs.

The band love to throw their satirical, uncomfortable and socially-aware lyrics into many more faces than before. The band decided to expand the sound and recruited an alto saxophone player Julia and later Alban. Toxkäpp! were ready to enter the studio and cut their first full-length album in 1999.

First Album.

SKAMEIDI (“Ska-Noise”, Kaméidi meaning “noise, rumble, ruckus” in Luxembourgish) came out in July 2000 in a digipack CD version. The title of this album refers to the new style of music (Lux-Ska-Punk) the band proudly proclaimed to have created with this album.

After the release of this album there was a short period of gigs all over Luxembourg and western Europe after which all the newly-recruited members had decided to leave the band again as they wanted to pursue their own projects.

Toxkäpp! , hired a new saxophone , trombone and an organ player to complete the line-up to finally have the sound like as they had always intended. This line-up would write future classic Toxkäpp! material and would play a lot in and outside of Luxembourg, definitely putting the band on the map in Europe.

On the compilation CD “Planet Lëtzebuerg” they covered the old Luxembourgish folk song “De Schmadd” in their own unique style in the year 2000.

Second Album.

By 2005 the band was a well-oiled ska-trouble machine and were ready to re-enter the studio for the second album. ZWEE-TOUN-SKA-PUNK (Two-tone-ska-punk) is not only again a description of the contents of the style of music but also marks the definitive severing of their punk rock roots as the music on this album would exclusively be two-tone-inspired song material. Then, after a further year of gigging with the new CD, Toxkäpp! stopped, due to the tragic loss of their organ player.

The core of the band had found back together in the wake of the mourning over the tragic loss of their organ player and decided to honour his memory by continuing Toxkäpp!. Soon, new members were recruited to finally make sure that the sound would be as fat as it always deserved to be.

This line-up would play the now-legendary come-back gig on the Summer festival at “Ligue HMC” in Capellen in Western Luxembourg in July 2009. It was official then that Toxkäpp!, were back again and a force to be reckoned with, now more than ever before.

This line-up being nine people on stage from now on (with an extended horn section of two saxophones, a trumpet and a trombone), they quickly wrote new material and went into a new studio to record “eSKAléiert”.

15 years of TOXKÄPP!

eSKAléiert a 5-song e.p. was released in October 2010 for the 15th anniversary gig at the Kulturfabrik Esch/Alzette, with very special guests, like Too Many Crooks and Mark Foggo and the Skasters. This was a great ska night with the best two-tone music around and would pave the way for the future of the band.

Toxkäpp! Played as supportband for : Skarface, The Planetsmashers, Rudeboy System , The Business, Ska-P , Bim skala Bim[[1]] , Dr Ring Ding ,The Slackers , The Aggrolites, The Toasters , Seeed , Madness on stage , to name but a few.
