Fall was a political scientist, but one who had been a soldier and who spoke the soldier’s language and living the soldier's life. He obtained his data on the war while slogging through the mud of Vietnam with French colonial troops, with American infantry, and with South Vietnamese soldiers. He combined the usual academic analysis of Indochina with an unmatched perspective of the war from the soldier’s point of view.
Bernard B. Fall was born in 1926 in Vienna, Austria. With the persecution of the Jews, his family fled to France in 1938, settling in Nice. Four years later, as the Nazis poured into Southern France, his mother was deported to Auschwitz; his father killed by the Gestapo. At the age of sixteen, Bernard Fall joined the French Resistance and fought in the mountains of Savoy. In 1944, with the French Army, he served in the 4th Moroccan Mountain Division and was wounded during the last year of the war. In 1946, at the age of nineteen, Fall became a research analyst at the Nuremberg Trials.
