Article on schizophrenia [1]

After learning about schizophrenia in class, I’ve noticed that I seem to be extremely intrigued by this mental illness. Yes, it is very difficult to cope with and very hard on families who must live and deal with somebody who is affected daily, but it doesn’t take away how fascinating it is to learn about it.

After reading this article, I began thinking about how extremely tough it must be to decide to have children knowing there might be a high risk of giving birth to a child who may suffer from schizophrenia as well. How do you honestly make that choice? I understand what Jon may be feeling and may be concerned about, but is it really enough to stop somebody from being together in the future or for creating and giving birth to a human being? These are common questions for families who are dealing with similar genetic illnesses.

In my opinion, knowing the interventions available and knowing how controllable the illness is might simplify the answers to those common questions.

I took a look online to determine the interventions available and the most common ones found for schizophrenia are psychological interventions and family interventions.

Psychological interventions such as cognitive behaviour therapy are commonly more effective with the use of medication intake. This type of intervention uses communication as a way to relieve anxiety and sometimes depression. It also helps clients recognise specific behaviours they may practice often including emotions they may be feeling during these difficult times. This treatment offers a base of trust and collaboration between the client and the therapist.

Family interventions help every member living with the person suffering from schizophrenia. It encourages the household to communicate and to support each other during difficult times. Families must deal with a lot of negative emotions and feelings of hostility. This treatment helps decrease tension in the home and also offers educational information to inform every family member about this complex illness.

As mentioned, medication is also a way of controlling the symptoms of schizophrenia. It can reduce dementia and hallucinations, giving the client a better and calmer lifestyle.

Even though it may seem too difficult to deal with this type of mental illness, is it really a reason to never give it a shot?

Your input would be much appreciated!
