Lady Mary Shepherd, née Primrose (31 décembre 1777 – 7 janvier 1847), est une philosophe britannique héritière et critique des Lumières écossaises.

Biographie

Lady Mary Primrose est la deuxième fille de Neil Primrose, troisième comte de Rosebery. Elle est née dans le domaine familial de Barnbougle Castle près de Dalmeny dans le Midlothian^[1]. Après avoir reçu une éducation dans le cadre familial avec des précepteurs, elle épouse en 1808 un avocat anglais, Henry John Shepherd^[2]. Comme le montre sa correspondance, elle continue à s’intéresser à la philosophie qu’elle a découverte enfant. Elle publie dans les années 1820, deux ouvrages, en grande partie rédigés avant son mariage, si l’on en croit le témoignage de sa fille. Le premier (An Essay upon the Relation of Cause and Effect) porte sur les relations causales, et le second (Essays on the Perception of an External Universe) sur la réalité du monde extérieur. Ce sont deux réfutations des positions de David Hume, mais aussi de celles de Thomas Brown, George Berkeley et Thomas Reid^[2]. Ces publications suscitent l’admiration et la polémique. Elle entretient en particulier une controverse avec John Fearn, qui est publiée dans les Parriana en 1828^[2].
