Philip Ball (né en 1962) est un écrivain scientifique britannique. Il a été rédacteur de la revue Nature [1] et publie une chronique régulière dans Chemistry World . Il a contribué à des publications allant de New Scientist [2] au New York Times, The Guardian, Financial Times et New Statesman . Il est le contributeur régulier du magazine Prospect [3] et également chroniqueur pour Chemistry World, Nature Materials et BBC Future. Il a diffusé à plusieurs reprises à la radio et à la télévision et, en juin 2004, il a présenté une série en trois parties sur la nanotechnologie, Small Worlds, sur BBC Radio 4 .
Il publie en 2004 Critical Mass How One Thing Leads to Another, lauréat du prix Aventis 2005 pour les livres scientifiques[4].
En 2011, il publie The Music Instinct[5]
Ball obtient un diplôme en chimie d' Oxford et un doctorat en physique de l'Université de Bristol.
