Marburgvirus est un genre de filovirus comprenant l'unique espèce marburgvirus Marburg, qui regroupe elle-même deux virus génétiquement distincts : le virus Marburg et le virus Ravn.

Un virus appartient au genre Marburgvirus si^[2]^,^[3] :

son génome contient un chevauchement de gènes ;
son quatrième gène (GP) code une seule protéine (GP_1,2) dont l'expression ne requiert aucune édition cotranscriptionnelle ;
les virons les plus infectieux ont une longueur d'environ 665 nm ;
son génome diffère de celui du virus Marburg de moins de 50 % au niveau des nucléotides ;
sa réactivité antigénique est distincte de celle des virions du genre Ebolavirus.
