Foodvisor is a French start-up created in 2015 by Charles Boes, Yann Giret, Gabriel Samain and Aurore Tran[1]. The company develops Foodvisor mobile application, officially launched in January 2018[2]. It’s mission is to help people track its diet by using Artificial Intelligence[3].

Presentation

[modifier | modifier le code]

Foodvisor is a free nutrition app providing the nutritional report of its plate by taking a picture of it[4]. Depending on the gender, the weight, the age, the lifestyle and the objective, the application indicates the daily nutritional intake to be respected. The application is based on Deep Learning algorithms which recognize foods from a picture, estimate the serving and provide a nutritional report including: calories, macronutrients (fats, proteins, carbs, fibers) and the micronutrients (cholesterol, sodium, potassium, magnesium, vitamins, calcium, iron...). In addition, Foodvisor also provides a nutritional report by scanning industrial products barcodes or entering its food manually. Other features, such as statistics and the tracking of the calories burned by physical activities, are available in the application. A Premium version gives access to additional features like specific diets, recipes, a Chat with the Foodvisor’s dietitians and daily personalized reports.

Foodvisor was created in 2015 by Charles Boes, Yann Giret and Gabriel Samain from École centrale Paris, joined by Aurore Tran[5], an innovation and marketing specialist, graduated from ESSEC Business School. After working on algorithms providing automatic photo recognition, they decide to create Foodvisor startup. Their idea is to help people monitor their diet, thanks to food-image recognition technology. At the beginning of this project, the algorithms recognize about twenty food items[6]. In 2016, the team launches a first beta version[7] of the application, on the App Store. After 2 years of Deep Learning algorithm training, the app is able to recognize more than 1000 food items by the end of 2017[8] and has more than 100 000 users. In January 2018, Foodvisor officially launches its application on iOS and on Android, as well as a Premium version[9]. The company then employs about ten people working on Research and Development, Product Management, Marketing and Nutrition, and Back-End. In May 2018, Foodvisor is entering the second promotion of the Facebook Start-up Garage in Paris[10]. This 6 months program aims to support 10 French start-ups on transversal issues such as data management. In the meantime, Apple also incubates the start-up and support Foodvisor’s teams on issues related to technology and internationalization. In October 2018, Foodvisor raised €1 million, including from investment fund of the French entrepreneur Xavier Niel[11]. In the same month, the start-up received Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO[12], during this travel in Europe. In January 2019, the application exceeds 1 million downloads and announces its launch in several European countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany and Spain[13].

Food recognition

[modifier | modifier le code]

Foodvisor’s concept is to take a picture of its plate in order to get a nutritional report. Food recognition is performed using Deep Learning algorithms, a branch of artificial intelligence, developed in 2015 by the founding engineers of Foodvisor during their final year project at Ecole Centrale Paris. The algorithms act like the neurons in the human brain. When getting a picture, they analyze the color, size, shape and brightness of the food to determine its nature and serving[14]. To be able to recognize a new food, the algorithm must have seen several hundred photos of that food. The algorithms are self-learning as the users' photo base increases. The more users the application has, the more photos it gets, the more algorithms are trained and increase their performance[15].

Foodvisor's food recognition can be wrong, especially on mixed dishes where food identification is more confusing[16]. It is also difficult for the technology to recognize if some condiments have been added, like sugar, salt, oil, if they do not modify the food aspect. Users can however correct the food analyse result[17] or personalize the condiments or cooking method used, allowing the technology to learn continuously.

Free features

[modifier | modifier le code]

The application's free features[18] include the recommendation of daily nutritional intakes to be respected and a detailed nutritional assessment via pictures of its plate. It takes into account quantities and indicates calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, fibers, cholesterol, sodium, potassium, magnesium, vitamins, calcium or iron. The scanning of barcodes of packaged industrial products and the manual entry are also part of the free features, as well as statistics and the taking into account of calories burned during physical activity.

Premium features

[modifier | modifier le code]

The application's paid features are only available in the Premium[19] version of the application. They include the diet programs: rebalancing, Keto diet, Low Carb, dry, vegetarian, Mediterranean and Detox diets, muscle mass building, gluten-free diet, the 6 Weeks Challenge, as well as the Beach Body and Clean Eating programs. There are also recipes, a Chat with Foodvisor dieticians, and daily reports indicating food recommendations and advice on which macronutrients to choose for the next day.

Competitors

[modifier | modifier le code]

Food logging apps are numerous on the market. MyFitnessPal, LifeSum and Yazio have existed for several years. Foodvisor differentiates thanks to the food recognition technology from pictures, avoiding any manual entry[20].
