Hi there. As many of you are already aware, this article can be further clarified and improved. There are also a number of factual inaccuracies that should be reviewed and corrected. In the interest of transparency I am declaring that Glencore is my client. I hope to work with other editors to ensure that this Wikipedia article is accurate. Please contact me on my Talk Page if you have any questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated, please forgive the English instructions.

Introduction

Paragraph 1, Sentence 1

Glencore has changed its name. The first sentence is out of date.

“Glencore-Xstrata is an Anglo-Swiss company providing trading and brokerage of raw materials. It was established on 2 May 2013 as a result of the merger of Glencore, a trading company started by the trader Marc Rich and Xstrata, a multinational active in mining. It is based in Switzerland in Baar, in the canton of Zoug.”

We would recommend amending it to read the below. This is referenced to a FT piece.

Glencore plc is an Anglo–Swiss multinational commodity trading and mining company headquartered in Baar, Switzerland and with its registered office in Saint Helier, Jersey. The company was created through a merger of Glencore with Xstrata on 2 May 2013.[3]

Paragraph 2, Sentence 1

This data is out of date.

“In 2011, the group employed more than 2,700 staff involved in marketing and 54,800 staff (in 30 countries) involved directly or indirectly in Glencore’s industrial operations1.”

There is no new data with regards to the breakdown in employees. We would instead recommend the below as taken from the 2013 annual report.

“In 2013, the group employs around 200,000 people, including contractors.”

Paragraph 2, Sentence 3

The below comment is out of date and the link does not work. Please could it be removed.

“The group is also believed to control at least 45% of the world market for lead4, a toxic but strategic metal (for batteries, nuclear, arms and munitions for war, hunting and sports shooting, tetraethyl lead..) for which prices have considerably increased.”

Paragraph 3, Sentence 2

The comment that it is a “very controversial company” is a value judgment without a reference. Please could this be removed and amended to the below.

The company founder, Marc Rich has been charged on several occasions for corruption and tax evasion5. After having operated for 37 years in a halo of mystery, this company which in 2008 received the Public Eye Award for the most irresponsible multinational5

Paragraph 3, Sentence 3

Ivan Glasenberg now owns 8.3% of the company following the Xstrata acquisition. As the value of the shares are subject to change, we would recommend removing the market value of his shares. We also believe that the remark that this “should force the group to be a little more transparent” should either be removed or fully referenced to the article in the sentence. Please see below suggested sentence.

The owner, Ivan Glasenberg, is considered “the world’s premier broker”, with 8.3 % of the group’s shares.

What does Glencore produce?

For the section on “What Glencore produces”, please could we use the updated narrative from the website as per the below. The current narrative is taken from the website prior to the acquisition of Xstrata

According to its website, Glenore is a major producer and marketer of over 90 commodities. The diversified operations comprise over 150 mining and metallurgical sites, oil production assets and agricultural facilities.

The company is structured into three distinct business segments:

Metals and minerals Includes copper, zinc/lead, nickel, ferroalloys, alumina/aluminium and iron ore production and marketing activities. The company has interests in both controlled and non-controlled industrial assets that include mining, smelting, refining and warehousing operations.

History

Paragraph 1, Sentence 1

The sentence is a value judgement without a reference. Please remove the reference to a “controversial” businessman. Please see below suggested sentence.

The group started from of a company established by Marc Rich, a Belgian businessman who has various nationalities, including American.

Paragraph 10, Sentence 1

The below sentence should start by referencing the article as it is not clear that the accusations are from Chris Hinde. There is also no mention of the Group being a monopoly in the article. Please remove that reference.

The group has also become quite powerful and a monopoly as it has become “one of the rare mining companies capable of fixer prices, rather than just raising them”4, according to Chris Hinde, director of the specialist magazine Mining Journal which adds that this group which owns mines and also employs agents of change qui in the domain of the commerce of the raw materials works in “quite a secret world” and “basically fixes the prices of certain very important products”4.

Please could it be amended to read

According to Chris Hinde, director of the specialist magazine Mining Journal, the group has also become quite powerful as it has become “one of the rare mining companies capable of fixer prices, rather than just raising them”4. The piece adds that this group owns mines and also employs agents of change qui in the domain of the commerce of the raw materials works in “quite a secret world” and “basically fixes the prices of certain very important products”4.
