Population of Sardinian deers in Sardinia is now more than 300 specimens. This number occurred in 1985 when the WWF acquired the area of the oasis (180 deers in Monte Arcosu). The last census (2005) has found 6000 specimens quite, distributed in three areas as following:

  • 2600 specimens in the Sulcis forests: 1000 in WWF Oasis of Monte Arcosu and 1600 and 1600 in the contiguous forests of regional property (Gutturu Mannu, Pantaleo, Monte Nieddu, Is Cannoneris). A WWF guideman told me some days ago that the specimens in the reserve are actually 1100 (last census in 2006)
  • more than 2000 specimens in the Sarrabus forests (Serpeddì and Sette Fratelli mountains)
  • 1500 specimens in Monte Linas park: 1250 in the shrublands of Arbus territory and the rest in the Monte Linas
  • 400 specimens in the fencings of the Agency Forests of Sardinia Region

In the mountains of Orgosolo (Gennargentu) there aren't deers still. Maybe in the future the Sardinian deer will be reintroduced also in the Park of Gennargentu but at the moment there are still difficulties.
