English: Located within the Arctic Circle, northern Finland experiences some the world’s harshest and snowiest winters. But even the 2020 winter season was exceptional by Finnish standards.
Lapland, the northernmost region of Finland, just endured its snowiest winter in 60 years. Meteorologists reported that the winter snow arrived in October, and persistent cold temperatures hindered the snow from slowly melting over the months. By January 2020, some towns recorded https://newsnowfinland.fi/weather/record-snowfall-keeps-lapland-looking-like-a-winter-wonderland almost triple the amount of snow on the ground than normal for the season. In late May, unusually warm temperatures began to rapidly melt the high volume of snow and caused significant flooding to nearby homes and farms. Several rivers have swelled, causing the closure of a bridge and prompting flood warnings for several towns. The natural-color image above shows the area around Ivalo, Finland, on May 25, 2020. While some land remains frozen, other portions have become muddy with melt water. The image was acquired by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8. Die Meteorologen berichteten, daß der erste Schnee bereits im Oktober gefallen ist, und anhaltende kalte Temperaturen hinderten ihn die ganze Zeit über, im Laufe der Monate zu schmelzen. Im Januar 2020 meldeten einige Städte fast die dreifache Schneemenge am Boden, die normalerweise in der Jahreszeit üblich ist. Ende Mai 2020 führten ungewöhnlich warme Temperaturen dazu, daß große Schneemengen rasch abschmolzen und Häuser und Farmen von Schmelzwasser überflutet wurden. Zahlreiche Flüsse schwollen an, erzwangen die Sperrung einer Brücke und führten zu Hochwasserwarnungen für mehrere Städte. Dieses Satellitenbild in natürlichen Farben zeigt die Umgebung von Ivalo, Finnland, am 25. Mai 2020. Während einige Teile des Lanes gefroren blieben, wurden ander durch Schmelzwaser sumpfig. Das Satellitenbild wurde mit dem Operational Land Imager (OLI) des Landsat 8 angefertigt. Das Ausmaß der Überschwemmungen ist auch auf Bildern sichtbar, die durch Satellites mithilfe von Synthetic Aperture Radar angefertigt werden. |
