Description
English: War memorial for Newfoundland soldiers at Beaumont Hamel, France, during World War I. This monument of a caribou at Beaumont Hamel, France, is dedicated to the Newfoundland soldiers who lost their lives on the first day of the Battle of the Somme: July 1st, 1916. Below the caribou, which is draped in a Union Jack, stand a group of dignitaries. Included in this group are Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig (1861-1928) and French General, Marie Fayolle (1852-1928). Speaking is John R. Bennett, Colonial Secretary of Newfoundland.

The original caption with the photograph is in French and it reads: "Beaumont Hamel. Le monument élevé à la mémoire des soldats de Terre Neuve. Discours de Mr Benett. À ses côtés : Mr D.Haig, Mr Fayolle. Ph. Ch. Biard Paris."

Public domain logo
This UK artistic or literary work, of which the author is unknown and cannot be ascertained by reasonable enquiry, is in the public domain because it is one of the following:
  • A photograph, which has never previously been made available to the public (e.g. by publication or display at an exhibition) and which was taken more than 70 years ago (before 1 January 1954); or
  • A photograph, which was made available to the public (e.g. by publication or display at an exhibition) more than 70 years ago (before 1 January 1954); or

Warning sign This tag can be used only when the author cannot be ascertained by reasonable enquiry. If you wish to rely on it, please specify in the image description the research you have carried out to find who the author was. The above is all subject to any overriding publication right which may exist. In practice, publication right will often override the first of the bullet points listed.

Unpublished anonymous paintings remain in copyright until at least 1 January 2040. This tag does not apply to engravings or musical works. More information
Reason: The PD-UK-unknown tag does not apply. The author is known. He is identified in the original caption that came with the photograph. Also, the photograph was taken in France by a Paris photographer and likely published in France first or at least concurrently as in the UK. A copy of the photograph happened to find its way to a library's collection in the UK, but that does not make it a photograph of UK origin nor does it give the copyright on the photograph to the library. The death year of the author, French photographer Ch. Biard, is not specified in the source. Depending on the date of death, the photograph may be under copyright or in the public domain.
