Maggie Siner is a contemporary American painter.

Early life, education and travels

[modifier | modifier le code]

Siner was born and grew up in Providence, Rhode Island in a jewish family that had migrated from Russia and Poland to the USA in the early 1900's. Siner attended Boston University (1969-1973, BA, 1973) and the American University (1974-76, MA, 1976). While at Boston University, Siner met Robert D'Arista [1], and she joined American University in order to work with him. He was a great influence in Siner's work. She also was educated in human gross anatomy at Georgetown University Medical School (1986), and was an instructor in gross Anatomy at the same University 1987-1988. At that time she was also doing medical illustrations as a freelancer, at the same time as painting and exhibiting.

Siner lived in France from 1976 to 1981 (near Aix-en-Provence), moved back in the USA (Northern Virginia), while also frequently returning to France for teaching.

Since first went to China in 1991, and worked there in 1992-93, at Xiamen University in Xiamen, PRC (Professor of Painting). She also went to teach in China in 1999 and in 2004.

Siner first went to paint in Venice in 2008, and started living there part of the year since then.

In a recent interview for the NashvilleArts magazine [1], Siner states that "I work from direct visual perception, which means I am looking at the subject as I’m painting it. In truth, I’m painting the colors and shapes created by light falling on various things, but not painting the things themselves. Just about anything that creates interesting shapes, has three-dimensional form creating light and shadow, and some delicious color harmonies is a good subject for painting." She also says she is attracted to drapery, as expressive of movement and time passing. .Maggie Siner is painting from life, from what she sees ("perceptual painting"). It is how she is seeing, not what she is seeing. How brains perceive light and turn it into objects. Her technique is traditional oil painting technique, material and techniques that are archivally sound. Materials will not disintegrate and fade, but stay fixed. The point of painting is to make it permanent. The statement stays the same for hundreds of year.
