Eliane Umuhire

Eliane Umuhire is a Rwandan actress and comedian born in 1986 in Kigali and living in France.

She is notably known in the cinema for having played the role of Claudine in the film Birds are singing in Kigali (Ptaki spiewaja w Kigali) by Krzysztof Krauze and Joanna Kos-Krauze (en) released in 2017, which earned her several distinctions in international film festivals (Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, Gdynia Polish Film Festival).

Theatre training

Born in 1986 into a family of artists, which introduced her to the world of art at a very young age. She grew up with sculptors and painters' uncles, while her paternal grandfather was a poet. She thus began acting at school at the age of 12.

Career in theatre

Eliane Umuhire studied accounting at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Rwanda.

During her studies, she joined the Stars of Theater, the university's theatre company. The Arts Centre of the university then introduced her to the world of theatre and contemporary dance. As an actress, Eliane Umuhire has often performed in theatres in Kigali: at the Mashirika Performing Arts and the Ishyo Arts Center. In 2009, after graduating from university, she joined Hope Azeda of Mashirika Performing Arts and Media Company where she played various roles including actress, dancer and acting trainer.

She is also an author and director of plays, including Syrian and Burundian Synchronized Voices-Monologues directed and presented at the Ubumuntu Arts Festival. She also contributed to the writing of the play Notre maison . She also contributed to the writing of Notre maison . She directed herself in her solo play Numa ceceka, written by Phoebe Mutetsi.

More recently she has performed in the children's play Les enfants d'Amazi, the contemporary dance project Planet Kigali and the theatre project Ejo N'Ejo Bundi.

In addition, Eliane Umuhire has been artistically involved in projects related to the commemoration and preservation of the memory of the victims of the 1994 Tutsi genocide.

Over the years, Eliane Umuhire has performed on stages in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tunisia, Sweden, Germany, the United States, Italy, Poland, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, etc...

Film career

The debut with Things of the Aimless Wanderer

Eliane Umuhire made her debut in international cinema in 2015, landing a role in the Rwandan-American film Things of the Aimless Wanderer (pl).

Awards for his lead role in Birds are singing in Kigali

Eliane Umuhire played one of the two lead roles in the Polish film Birds are singing in kigali, directed in 2017 by Joanna Kos-Krauze and Krzysztof Krauze. This Polish production about the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis is the actress's first international film. The film's plot takes place both in Rwanda and in Poland where it was shot. Thanks to this role, she shared the Best Actress Award with Jowita Budnik, who shares the poster for the film with her, at the Gdynia Polish Film Festival, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the Chicago International Film Festival. In addition to these, she won the Best Performance Award at the Let'sCEE International Film Festival, the Mastercard rising star award at the Netia OFF camera International Independent Film Festival and the Best Actress award at the Polish Film Festival in New York.

Trees of Peace

Eliane Umuhire is one of the four lead actresses in Alanna Brown's Trees of Peace, a film (to be released in 2020) that tells the story of four women of different backgrounds and beliefs who are trapped and forced into hiding during the Rwandan genocide. The film follows their struggle for survival which, against all odds, unites them in an unbreakable brotherhood.

Neptune Frost

She played the role of Memory in the film Neptune Frost by American poet and rapper Saul Williams (to be released in 2021).

Eliane Umuhire is committed to environmental protection. She regularly shares nature awareness messages on social networks.

During the containment of the COVID-19 pandemic, she has regularly set herself up in a natural environment to raise awareness of the need to be closer to nature and to refocus us on our inner nature.

In 2018, Eliane Umuhire marries French humanitarian worker and adventurer Valentin Forand.
