Joel Plaskett[modifier | modifier le code]
Joel Plaskett naît le 18 avril, 1975 est un musicien rock canadien, originaire de Lunenberg, Nouvelle-Écosse. Il est maintenant après plusieurs Junos, et East Coast Music Awards un des musiciens le plus respecté au Canada. Plaskett réside présentement à Dartmouth Nouvelle-Écosse avec sa famille.
Enfance et adolescence[1][modifier | modifier le code]
Joel Plaskett naît le 18 avril 1975 à Lunenberg, Nova Scotia, Canada. Il vient d’une famille avec une tradition musicale. Son père est aussi musicien; un des fondateurs du Lunenberg Folk Harbour Festival. Les parents de Plaskett lui on acheté un ensemble de tambour, mais il n’était pas intéressé aux rudiments de base. A treize ans, sa famille a déménagé à Halifax, Nova Scotia. Éventuellement, il décide d’étudier la guitare avec son père et en école secondaire il forme avec ses amis le groupe: The Hoods. Plaskett a appris à jouer de la guitare et à composer à un jeune age, surtout en écoutant des artistes comme Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Sex Pistols et les Pixies. C’est à Halifax ou il forme son premier groupe professionnel avec ses amis Rob Benvie et Ian McGettigen. Le groupe s’est éventuellement nommé Thrush Hermit avec quatre membres.

Thrush Hermit[2][modifier | modifier le code]
Thrush Hermit était un groupe formé dans l’adolescence de Joel Plaskett, le groupe était basé à Halifax. Plaskett était le chanteur principal et le guitariste principal. En 1994, le group était signé par Murderecords. Le batteur Michael Catano, cette même année était remplacé par Cliff Gibb. Le group a enregistré deux albums. Le premier album en 1997: Sweet Homewrecker sous l’étiquette Elektra et producteur Doug Easley était enregistré à Memphis. La réception commerciale était très faible, ce qui enchaîne la chute de l’étiquette du groupe. Ils ont eu une deuxième chance avec un deuxième album sous l’étiquette Sonic Unyon Records. Par contre Clayton Park, n’était pas un succès, ce qui résulte à la séparation du groupe en 1999.
Neuseiland[3][modifier | modifier le code]
Le groupe Neuseiland était formé par Joel Plaskett en 1998. Le groupe composait de plusieurs membres de différents groupes de la région de Halifax qui avait récemment subdivisé comme le groupe Thrush Hermit de Plaskett. Le groupe a enregistré un album appelé Neuseiland. Le nom du groupe était inspiré par un livre d’enfants d’Annie Schmidt du même titre. Les influences du groupe sont King Tubby, Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, Ray’s Chicken Pita, Willie Nelson. Dans le groupe, il y avait Plaskett au batterie, Charles Austin et Drew Yamada sur guitare, Andrew Glencross sur le clavier et Tim Stewart à la basse. Le but du groupe était de créer une amalgamation de divers styles plus expérimentale.
Carrière solo[modifier | modifier le code]
Après l’éclatement des deux groupe: Thrush Hermit et Neuseiland, Plaskett s’est lancé dans une carrière solo. Son premier album titré: In Need of Medical Attention, était un album qui composait de beaucoup de chansons qui était composé vers la fin de son temps avec Thrush Hermit. L’album était bien reçu, mais se n’était pas avant son deuxième qu’il reçoit plus de recognition. Son deuxième album de 2001: Down at the Khyber a présenté son nouveau groupe arrière: The Emergency. Le group se composait de Dave March sur la batterie et Tim Brennen sur la basse. Le nom de ce groupe était: Joel Plaskett Emergency. L’album a gagné Plaskeet son premier nomination au Junos, pour meilleur nouvel artiste.
Le prochain album en 2003 était un succès commerciale. L’album Truthfully Truthfully était le premier de plusieurs avec l’étiquette MapleMusic Recordings, une étiquette indépendante canadienne. L’album a été produit par son copain de Thrush Hermit Ian McGettigan. L’album a même gagné un East Coast Music Award pour le meilleur album rock de l’année.
Son quatrième album en 2005 album Le Da Da était plus dans un style solo, par contre Ian McGettigan a joué la basse. L’album était plus personnel et moins commerciale. L’album a reçu deux prix de East Coast Music Awards pour “Male artist of the Year”, artiste masculin de l’année et pour “Songwriter of the Year”, auteur-compositeur de l’année pour la chanson “Happen Now”. Il a aussi eu une nomination des prix Juno pour “Songwriter of the year”.[4]
L’année suivante en 2006, le Joel Plaskett Emergency a sorti leur premier DVD: Make a Little Noise. La chanson “Nowhere with You” a reçu le plus de temps d'antenne courant de toutes ses chansons précédentes et cette chanson était même présenté dans une publicité de Zellers. Cet album a gagné trois prix aux East Coast Music Awards: DVD de l’année, single de l’année ("Nowhere with You"), and songwriter de l’année (Joel Plaskett, pour "Nowhere with You”)
Son prochain album en 2007, Ashtray Rock était un album concept[5]. Le concept était un école secondaire avec les thèmes d’amour et souffrance. L’album a été sélectionné pour le Polaris Music Prize en 2007, mais a perdu contre l’album Close to Paradise de Patrick Watson. La chanson “Fashionable People” a été nominé pour le “Independant Music Awards” pour le genre pop/rock.
En décembre 2007, Plaskett et Emergency ont joué six concerts consécutives au Horseshoe Tavern à Toronto pour célébré le soixantième anniversaire du lieu . Chaque nuit le groupe a joué un des six albums commençant avec In Need of Medical Attention et finir avec Ashtray Rock. En 2008 il a été nominé pour huit prix au East Coast Music Awards dont il a gagné six pour l’album Ashtray Rock.
L’année suivante, 2009, il fait un autre album solo appelé: Three. Il y a vingt-sept chansons sur l’album. Une des chansons de l’album, “Through and Through and Through” a été encore sélectionné pour la courte liste du 2009 Polaris Music Prize. Cette même année Paul McCartney a choisi le groupe Wintersleep et Joel Plaskett pour les actes d’ouvertures pour son concert le 11 juillet 2009 au Halifax Common[6]. L’album Three a gagné un prix Juno pour album alternative, adulte de l’année. Il a été aussi nominé pour songwriter de l’année. En mai 2011, il était le premier artiste avoir plus d’un million écoutes sur CBC Radio 3’s site web pour streaming.
En 2012, Joel Plaskett enregistre un autre album Scrappy Happiness, avec le retour des membres du groupe Emergency. Cet album fut enregistré différemment, avec une chanson publié chaque semaine pour dix semaines avant la publication de l’album au complet de dix chansons.
Son album le plus récent, The Park Avenue Sobriety Test était publié en mars 2015. Cet album représente plusieurs styles, il démontre ses capacité acoustiques et son côté rock avec son groupe Emergency. Comme la majorité de ses thèmes de chanson, il fait plusieurs références à son jeunesse au Nouvelle-Écosse. L’album représente une réflexion du passée, et un regard au future. Même l’acronyme du titre de l’album P.A.S.T. démontre le passé. Il fait des réflexions à son jeunesse en jouant hockey dans la rue et son voyage à Memphis pour le premier album avec Thrush Hermit. L’album représente un peu l’adolescent de Ashtray Rock qui est devenu un adulte, par contre l’album n’est pas complètement autobiographique. Les collaborateurs sur l’album sont le violoniste celtique J.P. Cormier du Cape-Breton, Nouvelle-Écosse, Joel Plaskett Emergency avec Dave March, Chris Pennell, Tim Brennan, Peter Elkas, son ami de longue date Ian McGettigan, Mo Kenney, Erin Costelo et Dale Murray. L’album représente un histoire de passer à travers les moments difficiles de la vie.[7]
