The Digital Humanitarian Network is a network-of-networks, enabling a consortium of Volunteer and Technical Communities (V&TCs) to interface with humanitarian organizations that seek their services. Current members of the DHNetwork are DataKind, GISCorps, ESRI, MapAction, Humanitarian Open Street Map Team, Geeks Without Bounds, Standby Task Force,Translators without Borders, Statistics Without Borders and UN Online Volunteering Service.

Mission[modifier | modifier le code]

The purpose of the Digital Humanitarian Network (DHNetwork), initiated on 09 April 2012, is to leverage digital networks in support of 21st century humanitarian response. More specifically, the aim of this network-of-networks is to form a consortium of Volunteer & Technical Communities (V&TCs) and to provide an interface between formal, professional humanitarian organizations and informal yet skilled-and-agile volunteer & technical networks.

History[modifier | modifier le code]

In recent crises, like the 2010 Haiti earthquake, talented and committed members of online technology communities have stepped up to gather, process and share crucial information resources to help aid agencies on the ground. These potent and agile resources must however be focused the priority information needs of aid agencies and other responders, otherwise there is a risk of merely contributing to 'data noise'. This issue was recognised after Haiti and the volunteer communities have now responded by establishing a 'network of networks' with the aim of focusing the response of the 'ecosystem' of online groups onto the most urgent information needs during each new emergency. The result is the Digital Humanitarian Network (http://digitalhumanitarians.com/)[http://www.mapaction.org/more-news/300-teaming-up-with-the-digital-humanitarians.html, with, at its heart, a coordinators group:Digital Humanitarian Network Coordinators. The DHNetwork brought together many of the major V&TCs into one place thereby increasing their visibility both amongst themselves and to the traditional community. By defining a clear activation process with coordinators, traditional organizations are able to submit one request and rely on the DHNetwork to build a solution team with the relevant V&TC members. The DHNetwork also makes it simplier for organizations to define collaborative projects with the V&TCs.

Digital Humanitarian Network Coordinators[modifier | modifier le code]

The purpose of the DHNetwork Coordinators is to review activation-requests and rapidly liaise with the different volunteer & technical teams who are members of Digital Humanitarians to build a Solution Team best able to act on a request. The Coordinators aim to provide a response to every request within 24 hours.

Currently, the Coordinators of the Digital Humanitarian Network are:
