/sandbox The Battle of Chechen-Aul, also refered to as the 1732 insurgency in Chechnya, was a major battle between the Russian Empire and the Chechen people. it resulted in a significant victory for the latter.[1][2] This battle is responsible for the apocryphal story about how the people of the region came to be known as "Chechens"–The people onstensibly named for the place the battle had taken place. The word "Chechen" had already been used since as early as 1692, however.[3]
