Description“Salutation to the Great Spirit” (1963) by Frithjof Schuon.jpg
English: Philosopher, author, poet, and painter Frithjof Schuon (1907-1998) painted “Apparition of the Buffalo Calf Maiden” in 1963 during the years in which he lived in Switzerland. Schuon was deeply attracted to the Plains Indian people, and their religion, from a very young age. Later, he would write many articles elucidating many aspects of the spiritual traditions of the Plains peoples, as well as painting canvases full of symbolism and contemplative meaning. In one of his many letters, Schuon wrote: "What I seek to express in my paintings—and indeed I cannot express anything other—is the Sacred combined with Beauty, Thus, spiritual attitudes and virtues of soul. And the vibration that emanates from the paintings must lead inward." This painting, among many others, seems to exemplify Schuon's intended effect.
