English: On May 13, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-image of New England and northeastern Canada.

Although spring is well underway in the northern hemisphere, a layer of white snow covers much of northeastern Quebec in mid-May, especially on the mainland west of the St. Lawrence River. The bright white color over Nova Scotia, Canada and near-coastal New England in the United States are clouds, not show. A white bank of low cloud (fog) stretches over the Bay of Fundy southwards across the Gulf of Maine.

Much of the state of Maine, USA, the Canadian Maritimes (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island) and Quebec consists of rolling agricultural land, well known for such short-season crops as potatoes. The striking beauty of the region’s coastlines draw droves of tourists, especially from late spring through the warm, humid summers and into the oranges, reds and yellows of autumn. Agriculture, natural resources, fisheries, tourism and, to a lesser extent, manufacturing are primary drivers of the economy of this region.
