On the reverse side the bower design is repeated, thetrees, however, enclosing a crescent moon illustrating theline: The moon puts forth a little diamond peak. (Book IV, line 499.) 24 The central figure represents Pans holy priest beforethe sacrificial shrine, illustrating the lines: Thus ending, on the shrine he heaped a spireOf teeming sweets, enkindling sacred fire. (Book I, lines 223-4.) The doublures (see illustration No. 19) are of whitemorocco and are decorated with a delicate border of inlaidflowers and leaves enclosing emblems representing Peonaslyre, the bow of Artemis, Endymions crook, Boar spearand cymbals, all inlaid in appropriate colours outlined inblack, forming a pleasing contrast to the gold border andwhite background. The fly-leaves are of white morocco with pondrd ofinlaid flowers and gold dots in a panel of blue strapwork.
