A bottle of Kentucky Breakfast Stout from Founder's Brewing Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at The Brickskeller in Washington DC.
The Kentucky Breakfast Stout aka KBS is an 11,2% abv imperial stout, sought by many but hard to find - even in the US. It poured thick and pitch black into the glass, with a big brown head that decayed quickly. A roasted coffee aroma, with sweet malt and chocolate notes. A bit like Lost Abbey Older Viscosity. Rich, creamy mouthfeel. Taste starts out with a barrel aged feeling, the vanilla, and a light bourbon tone. Both giving it a freshness that went a long way to balance the massive maltiness and coffee of the beer. Long aftertaste where the roasted character and hop bitterness slowly takes over from the malty sweetness. A world class brew!
