The Research Vessel (R/V) Sikuliaq stopped at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Massachusetts in August 2014 for some final outfitting, and the stopover provided an opportunity for visitors from Capitol Hill, the research community and the National Science Foundation to check out NSF’s newest research vessel. The Sikuliaq--pronounced [see-KOO-lee-auk], an Inupiaq term meaning "young sea ice"—was launched in October 2012. The 261-foot, global class, ice-capable ship is owned by NSF, operated by the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and will be based in Seward, Alaska. The Sikuliaq will allow researchers to work in ice-covered waters not previously accessible on a routine basis and play an essential role in research to better understand the Arctic Ocean system and how it is changing.
