Description
English: Comparison of skulls from 3 dfferent genera of tyrannosauridae dinosaurs. The skulls of Tyrannosauridae are very caractheristic, with fused bones, special muscle attachment, and sharp teeth shaped like bananas, and deeply rooted in the jaw. Many genera also show signs of eyes faced forward, which may gave binocular vision.
  • 1. Tarbosaurus bataar (based on holotype PIN 551/1). Found in Mongolia, dated 74 - 65 million years old.
    • Big skull with large air pockets to reduce the weight,[1] and a brain only the volume of about 1, 85 - 1, 9 decilitres[2]
    • Snout is narrower than in Tyrannosaurus rex, and the grade of forwardfacing of the eyes vary.[3]
  • 2. Daspletosaurus torosaurus (based on specimen FMNH PR308). Found in Alberta, dated 75 million years old. Belived to be the ancestor of Tyrannosaurus rex.
    • Small horns above the eyes.
    • Eyes faced to the sides in some specimens (like FMNH PR308),[4] but some specimens may had eyes faced forward (MOR 590).[5]
  • 3. Gorgosaurus libratus (based on TMP 91.36.500). Found in Alberta, dated 75 million years old.
  • 4. Bistahieversor (based on the holotype NMMNH P-27469). Found in New Mexico, dated to about 74 million years old.
  • Not a member of family Tyrannosauridae, but a more basal relative.
  • 5. Albertosaurus sarcophagus. Found in Alberta, dated 75 million years old.
  • 6. Tyrannosaurus rex (Based on specimen MOR 555, aka. "Wankel rex"). Found in Montana, South Dakota, New Mexico and Utah, dated 68-65 million years old.
  • Skull was up to 5 feet long, and many specimens found have complete skulls, like "Stan" (BHI 3033), "Sue" (FMNH PR2081), and "Harley".[6]
  • 1. Massive skull without horns. The brain cavity had a size of almost a hole litre.[7]
  • 2. Eyes faced forward.

Binocular vision is also known in some specimens of the genera Albertosaurus and Nanotyrannus ( the last is a possible synonym to Tyrannosaurus ). For example, Albertosaurus shows both forwardfaced eyes to some degree.[8] or faced to the sides.[9] Nanotyrannus also shows signs of binocular vision in the specimen "Jane".[10]
