n the struggle for existence, gained by infiniteeffort its specially human character, we see clearlythat the soul-life of man has evolved from the samecrude foundations as that of other animals, and that )the instinct of these latter is distinct from thereason of man in quantity only, not in quality, in de-tails, not in essence. This holds as to the soul-move-ments of sensation and will as of those of thought, ofjudgment, of reason. But it will be yet clearer to anyone that the phenomena of division of labor referredto have evolved in human life in the same way as theyhave in that of lower animals, in consequence of kin-dred conditions of adaptation, if he studies the phe-nomena of comparative division of labor that are evennow to be discussed.
